Forums - Nintendo Discussion - It would have been nice if Nintendo didn't sell Rare

And also what happened to the Stamper brothers, the founders of Rare, that left their own created company last year? Have they formed a new company? Working on a non announced project for Nintendo, Microsoft? Having a year off holiday in a tropical island drinking margueritas?

Rare is barely a shadow of the development powerhouse they were when the N64 was Nintendo's focus. All the top developers and even the company founders left to greener pastures. The company is a shell of what it once was with pretty much all it's original talents long gone.

Nintendo sold them off for good reason, and for the better of Nintendo. Rare was essentially replaced with a superior dev house: Retro Studios. Rare is gone and now sucks. Time to move on. Perfect Dark Zero would still have sucked on the Wii. It just would've sucked in a different way. Frankly, I'm glad Grabbed by the Ghoulies didn't end up disgracing a Nintendo system.

Nintendo did right to sell of their shares of Rare. They are no longer the superb second party developer that they once were and is now a sub par first party developer under Microsofts iron hand. I'm not sure about this but didn't the founders of Rare leave the company not too long ago?

I do know one thing though; there recent offerings is not even remotely on the same plateau as their N64 offering. They had only one game for the gamecube but it was actually an N64 title to begin with.

If it wasn't for the Stamper Brothers selling the majority shares of the company to MS nitnendo wouldn't have been forced to sell their shares.

Did those who went to form FR leave before or after the takeover?

If I am not mistaken, I believe it was before they "sold out" to MS.

Rare doesn't make great games like they used to but they still make good games. Games like Perfect Dark Zero, Viva Pinanta, and Kameo are all average to good games and would have been good additions to the Wii library -- something the Wii library needs since most of Wii games outside of first party games are atrocious to bad. Quite simply, it wouldn't have hurt for the Wii to have the aforementioned games even if they weren't AAA games. It also wouldn't have hurt for the Wii to have Banjo Kazooie 3 and the rumored The Fast and Furriest.

As for Perfect Dark Zero, it got average review scores but it was obviously rushed to coincide with the 360 debut. With extra development time and the use of the Wii remote it may have been a classic on thw Wii.

It was a very bad move on Nintendo's part. The Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Quest, and Perfect Dark franchises will never grace a Nintendo console again. Too bad.

Letting MS pick up Rare was a genius move.  Rare was dead weight.  Rare hasn't made a game as good as GoldenEye since.

i don't see how PD Zero was "rushed". I remember seeing a technical demo of it during E3 2000 for the gamecube. It took them a whole GENERATION to get the thing out?

The only games planned for GCN were Dinosaur Planet (which was originally for N64 but got delayed the renamed Star Fox Adventures) and Donkey Kong racing, but got canned after the sale.

Unless you're talking about a game that's GTA 4 or MGS calibre, you can't release 1 game every 5 years. That's just insane (and even then we've seen three GTAs and 2 MGSes during the PS2 era).
