I put down 4th quarter 2008 (December) for the time PS3 to overtake the 360. Half way point of the year there is over a 5.5 million gap a further 5.6 million more PS3's than 360 sales would have to be sold in 6 months. The 360 would have to stop selling for that to happen.

Realistically I believe it will most likely occur in July 2009, when PS3 overtakes the 360 in total worldwide sales. Assuming the PS3 outsells the 360 in HW sales  by over 100 000 weekly for the next 52 weeks. Taking into account the holiday periods and weeks where 360 manages to get close to the PS3 weekly sales.

Mid 2012 - about 1 year after MS launches their next console, and sony is still trying to recoup cost fro mthe PS3, as per their own words:

"In order to stay competitive, said Sony, it had to invest large amounts of money in research and development to introduce the PlayStation 3 into the market, and these sorts of expenditures don't always get recouped, especially if a platform "fail[s] to achieve such favorable market penetration... resulting in a significant negative impact on Sony's profitability."

Even if it can recoup its investment, Sony said, it's still possible to have lost large amounts of money on the platform's introductory period, and even a successful PS3 might take a while to replace what it cost to produce. These possible outcomes are currently a risk for the company, Sony said."

By the end of this year the gap will be 3-4 mln.

HAHAHA!!!I love this thread!!when 2009 is near his end ad ps3 is still behind i''ll run into this thread...I am very curious guys what will you say then?I'm sure that most people here that claim that ps3 will overtake 360 by 1st quarter of 2009 will find excuses and will try to convince us that ps3 sales are tremendous (just as always!!).I'm sure that these guys,2 years ago, claimed that ps3 would have beaten 360 and Wii combined by the summer of 2008 but now they are always trying to convince us that they're very pleased with ps3's third place cause it WILL surpass them in the FUTURE!Give me a break!Sony is the big loser of this current generation!!So,what if it manges to overtake 360's sales?Do you know the gap between PS2 and xbox?100 million units my friends!!Now, how successful will be for Sony to win this battle for 5 or 10 million units when Microsoft will have double its sales and Sony on the opposite will have lost half of its market share?Explain me that please!

i would say q4 2009 is a realistic date.

Meh I'm pushed between Q3 and Q4 of 2009 but I'll push more towards 4th so put me down for Q4 09.
