Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Anti-Wii week continues: "Wii Is Nearing The End Of The Road"

Inevitably, the transition from NES/SNES/PS1/PS2-era consoles to this new style of system is generating a lot of resentment, the same way the transition from Atari/PC-era to NES/SNES/PS1/PS2-era led to a lot of upset from the established gaming crowd (an upset that remains to this day; how many PC gamers out there still declare all consoles to be a fad, and predict the return to PC gaming to be coming 'any day now'?). The big difference being, the market at large crashed in 1983, while the market as of 2006 was only showing the beginning signs of strain heading towards a potential crash. So there are a heck of a lot more NES/SNES/PS1/PS2-era gamers out there who see no need to transition to a new format than there were Atari/PC-era gamers who saw no need.

why aren't certain games marketed well? What determines which game is markted and which is not?

Maybe not totally accurate, in my case at least.  I had lots of fun in the NES/SNES days, as games were pretty straight forward for the most part, something you could just kinda pick up whenever, and weren't overly complex.  The PS1/PS2 era though saw the start of more in depth things, which really made me lose interest pretty fast.  With the Wii though, a lot of that simplistic yet fun style was reintroduced in a fresh way, which is what really grabbed me.

I imagine a lot of Nintendo's current success is just that.. people who already play games buying one, people who gave up on games a while back becoming interested again, and also grabbing those who hadn't played it before.  I think the term Nintendo used for people like me was 'lapsed gamers' or something, if I remember correctly.

You've nailed it pretty well, Yecats. Yes, the Wii largely appeals to lapsed gamers, casual/downmarket gamers, and new gamers, as well as the most open-minded of the 'core demographic (like myself). Their bridge games like Mario Kart Wii are also slowly but surely drawing the less open-minded core audience in and converting them to the new style. There will always remain a certain number who refuse to migrate over no matter how good it gets (for past generations, see: PC-only gamers who refuse to ever get a console), but they're markedly in the minority.

Wow, calm down Jeff, no reason to work yourself into a sweat over such a bad article. Remember, its the internet, anyone who has the hand eye coordination of a five year old can post anything they want, if they sound like a bafoon, then it is best to let them beat their own chest and howl at the moon while you slowly get in the car and drive away. Getting worked up won't change anything.

Welcome to the site by the way :)

Sorry for bumping, but I just had to when I saw this comment on his blog:

The fanboys wanted to lynch me when I said that SSBB wouldn’t be one of the top selling games of the year. Wii Fit will do better.

The Wii should be solid through Q4 this year, after the price drop. But the Super Wii with HDTV and a hard drive cannot be too far off."

There is no way SSBB won't be one of the top 10 selling games this year, but he still refuses to accept it.

It dismays me that I can't own this guy in person.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Not all Final Fantasy games are sequels, guys. There are improvements on graphics and gameplay, but nearly all of the stories are different.

Yeah, 13 variations on "A ragtag band of rebels battles a powerful Empire, only to discover that a greater evil is working behind the scenes."

Yeah, no.

Except the fact that 11 was online, VIII was a love story, XII was a story about the rightful heir to the throne, I had no storyline, etc.  Then they are the same, but each FF is as different as our fingerprints.

Lol, its our old pal Bruce, I had almost forgot about him...Don't be too hard on him stranne, he has "friends" in the "industry", powerful "friends"... ;)

Of course, there is still no proof that they read the drivel that flies out of his mouth with any regularity, let alone feel that he is anything more than a stubborn old coot who wouldn't know his backend from his face if he were looking at a mirror...
