Forums - Website Topics - NeoGAF gets really cranky about NYT mentioning VGChartz

Haters, the lot of them, they are afraid of VGChartz and what it stands for. They dislike the owner of this site and all of his supporters because God knows why, but I dislike them because most of them are ignorant hate-mongers.

Damn their eyes.

The reality is, the site views "sales" as a distasteful representation of the system wars. They don't want flame wars started because the often kicked around Nintendo group pwns the majority every week, and they don't want their forums to become one big advertisement for VGChartz.

It's trying to stem the tide of gaming and the internet sensation VGChartz, with mods and bans, and attempting to control the flow of information available to its more casual members, based on personal agenda.

Cool-aid drinkers. Wake up and get real. If you don't believe this sites numbers, then believe Nintendo's shipped numbers or NPD, but know this: It's retarded to hate a site because it's giving you factual information you hope is false, because you "think the Wii is ruining gaming."

Face reality for God sake.

That forum is a depressing bog.

Honestly, I used to be the same way. I used to hate the Wii so much, and when people posted Vgchartz articles of it doing so well, I would laugh them off as wrong and tell them to wait for the real numbers (NPD). The only reason I started coming here regularly was because lots of links were posted on the PS3 forums after the PS3 price cut and I was really curious how it helped.

Anyway, they are pretty hopeless on that site, it's best to just be the victim in this and let unjust hatred be known.

Some good stuff in here. Maybe when this thread dies down it can be cleaned up, locked and made a sticky.

This thread is the best thread ever, and I'll ban anybody who disagrees.

This thread should never be locked. It's a shining beacon of truth and justice, attracting trolls and haters and whiners like some sort of magic whistle. I've never seen so many new accounts created to throw 2 cents into just one thread.

Here's what it really comes down to:

They ban people for mentioning us. We don't.

We let this discussion continue and don't lock this thread. That's all the evidence you need to show that VGC is a better forum. We have freedom here to discuss things, like say... games, sales, our forum, other forums, whatever we want.

NeoGAF chooses not to have that freedom, and yet they have this elitist attitude, which is just fucking hilarious, considering they're doing exactly the same thing we are: discussing video games on the internet. I mean, if they want, I can draw them a trophy in MS Paint for the best whiner award or something.

I'd open up the limit on them individually, but that would take to long. Instead, I'll play the coy and innocent victim and history shall judge them harshly.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

OK, I didn't mean locking as a way to censor stuff. Maybe the best (civilized) parts can just be copied to a sort of archive/FAQ.

Guys we hardly need to get into a fight with GAF here They don't like our numbers? Whatever, their loss. No need to start up a feud.

If there is one thing that playing Final Fight taught me, it's that beating someone to a pulp and leaving them for dead in the streets solves everything. That's kind of what this thread is about now, but everyone is doing it with words. I think it's best to let everyone(even if they are NeoGaf acolytes) have their say as long as they obey the rules. Just my two credits.

Many people can be quite uncomfortable with using guesstimates to base the crux of their argument from. And rightfully so, many times arguments have broken out when references to numbers here have been made - when NPD or company numbers are released things just break down entirely and many people are painted as fools or morons.

The problem with this statement is that VGC numbers simply do not break down when compared to those of professional services. They're virtually always within 15% of NPD numbers (their own error margin), and as far from the two similar Japanese services as they are from each other. The numbers on this site stand up to comparison extremely well. Heck, during the holidays we had a month when ioi was closer to Nintendo's financial report than NPD.

That being said, I have some sympathy for GAF. They're a huge forum, so some kind of a list of stupid stuff that immediately gets you banned is more or less necessary, and I agree with quite a few of the things on their list. The problem is simply that the ban on VGC seems to come from ill will more than anything else, and the widespread disbelief in our numbers more from herd behavior and dissent leading to bans than anything else.

Also, doesn't the rule forbidding VGC say "Our numbers are right. Theirs are wrong. Period."? I'm not a fan of the whole "they're afraid of us because our numbers are better than theirs" claim, but that's what this looks like. Maybe if there was a public debate where they had to prove VGC numbers aren't good, or indeed they ever agreed to put out a list of their grievances, but the way the people running GAF are doing it now is just pathetic.

I have little trouble believing they suffer less from a few problems due to their ban-happy policies, though. Some users here seem to get away with even publicly admitting dodging several month long bans, and nothing is done about them...
