Forums - Sony Discussion - Kojima Disappointed With Metal Gear Solid 4

@ToastyJaguar , I knew you'd say that but considering we haven't seen anything from GoW2 except from art taken from it's early development stages, which may or may not be in game(probably isn't).

He should have made the game on the Wii... then he'd appreciate PS3 a lot more.

@BigJ, I'm not programmer, thats for damn sure, but I've heard and read so many things about both processors, and from what I've seen of insomniacs work, the PS3 still has PLENTY of headway. I don't know much about the general purpose uses for gaming, but when I hear people dumping graphics, physics, A.I., framerate, etc etc onto the SPE's, it seems to me that it's MUCH more accessible for gaming than some people want to accept.

Okay, well, if you can explain to me how an AI algorithm would work that can be done primarily in the SPEs I'll be impressed.

In fact, so will the greatest gaming minds of this generation. Tim Sweeney, the engine developer for the Unreal series of engines specifically said that the SPEs cannot be applied to AI.

Perhaps you can give me an example of a game this generation that dedicates 1/3 of CPU time to running AI code?

To give you some perspective, an average game last gen typically used about 10%. Unless you're suggesting that the amount of CPU time dedicated to AI has massively increased in proportion to other types of code, why would it be a problem?

Aside from graphics, the biggest leap this gen has almost certainly been in physics, which rely on floating-point calculations.

The statement that the 360 cpu is more suited to "general purpose computing" may be technically true, but it is also a red herring. If you see any technical advantage from the 360 over the PS3 it will likely be due to differences in RAM. The Cell stomps all over the 360 CPU in most aspects. It's only real disadvantage is it's difficulty to program for.

OT: Ouch!

@Toasty
To be honest, I'm not sure if Gears 2 will look better than un-charted xD And from what I've seen of it so far (Even if the shots were ingame), it's already massively outdated compared to MGS4 in the graphics department xD.

HOWEVER we haven't seen an in-dept movie of gameplay or anything, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt ;)

wow. Konami and Sony are not going to like this. It will get all blown out of proportion and not taken in the manner in which I think it was meant.

This is my interpretation.

1. We aimed for Uranus based on what we thought the PS3 was capable of prior to the design being finished.
2. Once the PS3 was finalized we realized we could only get to Jupiter. Still an amazing distance, as we have only been to the moon, but not quite as far as we originally pegged.

Basically, they just over estimated the power of TEH CELL! This also is kinda of interesting that he proclaims they have tapped 100% of the PS3's power already. Normally that isn't done this early in the life. I mean this is their first game.

I really think he should have not spoken about this. It will get all blown out of proportion.

Well look at it this way. Kojima is complaining that the PS3 isn't powerful enough for his ideas. No other developer has complained about the PS3 lacking power. Kojima sounds like a hard man to please. Yet Kojima also said he is happy with MGS4's GAMEPLAY. This suggests that the gameplay is going to be out of this world amazing.

Looks like Kojima was lead to believe the PS3 would be more powerful than it really is too.

*ding ding ding* Congratulations!! You're the first xbox fan to use this statement to bash the PS3, and as a special gift we have.....absolutely nothing, because this is over the internet and I don't know you irl.

OT: This is kind of Kojima's MO. My only issue with the statement is that he started lamenting about the restraints of putting what's in his head into a game before the game released, which may or may not have been the best idea, but I admire the guy's honesty. Cheer up Kojima, there's always next time dude ^^

No, i'm not bashing the PS3. What did i say that Kojima didn't say? Are you going to call him an Xbox fan too? I'm not saying they didn't make progress which they have and which Kojima states too. This game looks awesome. But yeah... i'm not bashing the ps3 anymore than Kojima, this game is my holiday treat.

Super, that is a fantastic analysis :P Your so right that this will be blown out of proportion, but oh well :D This game is going to be friggin fantastic XD

Well my apologies if I misunderstood your intentions. The part that made it sound like bashing was the "he was mislead about the PS3 too" It's the "too" part that makes your statement sound like PS3 bashing as though this is a common problem that alot of developers are talking about. Before that "too" part you're absolutely right, you said nothing that Kojima didnt'.

In conclusion, if you were genuinely not trying to bash, then I apologize for presuming your intentions.

...

Apology accepted, although it was a slight dig as i am a 360 fan, i just felt like i was lead to believe the ps3 was more powerful than it really is too. That's why i said it, but i don't want anymore of the console bashing.

Anyway i got the mag infront of me.

Kojima says, "It's just that we weren't really aware of what the full spec PS3 offered- we were creating something we couldn't entirely see".

It's as simple as that really.
