Forums - Gaming Discussion - YouTube no longer considers 720p as high-definition...

Do you consider 720p to be a viable res for gaming in 2020?

Yes 27 55.10%

No 22 44.90%

Total:49

Bit rate and video codec are more important. You tube and Netflix 1080p are far behind Blu-ray 1080p. 4K streaming is not much better, if better at all, than 1080p Blu-ray when it comes to scenes with plenty movement. Blu-ray has video rates up to 38 mbps for busy scenes, while 4K HDR streaming tops out at 18mbps (sound included) The 4K codecs are close to twice as efficient as Blu-ray's, still not enough to make up the difference and display 4x the color detail (10 bit vs 8 bit) and 4x the pixels, 5 times the information rate. DVD looks better than 720p You tube.

For games, down sampling a game from 4K to 720p, or playing 1080p on a 720p tv will look very good. Up scaling 720p to 1080p not so good. Anti aliasing is always a problem in games, up scaling makes all the flaws more noticeable. Movies don't have that problem. Of course it also depends on how well the display handles up scaling.

HD Cable tv is the worst, 5 to 8 mbps mpeg-2 720p/1080i. Outdated codec, low bit rate (still higher than you tube) and looks horrible in fast moving scenes or with lots of particles (like heavy rain, confetti raining down, strobe lights). But it's still called HD, even though analog cable (while it was still available) delivered a more stable better looking picture when it came to movement. HD is only HD in steady cam low movement scenes...

"HD" is just an advertising name, it's not important.

1440P isn't HD either. It's Quad-High Definition or sometimes referred to as 2k.

Quad HD...  Well, if 720p isn't HD anymore, 1440 can't be QHD anymore either.  Think about it. lol.

But for me, 1080p isn't MY standard anymore.  720p is just totally out of the question except for Switch and PS3.  1440p is my bare minimum to keep me happy.

So, I was just watching some gameplay on YouTube when I noticed something unusual.

Yup, YouTube no longer seems to consider 720 as HD. Kind of a bummer, really. Especially considering some people I know don't have the internet speeds to stream YouTube's new minimum HD resolution now. Although, I guess it really doesn't matter. Are companies other than YouTube also considering 720p as standard definition? I haven't bought a new TV in a while, so i'm not sure if HD TV's are doing this as well. Is this the new norm?

This is all news to me. I feel like i've been living under a rock, since I still consider 720p to be a great resolution for movies and gaming.

I agree "high definition" and "high resolution" need context and these definitions change over time.

In Amiga times "HiRes" started with 640x200 resolutions:

Let me add that 720p is absolutely unacceptable for VR.

To me, it doesn't matter what they're defining it. Resolution and progressive are matters.

It just HD uses advertisement or marketing for higher(beyond&beyond++) resolution every time they make brand new ANY devices in the future overtime just blowing your mind while "SD" this defines a legacy resolution for old devices.

I heard they're slowly dropping "HD, QHD, UHD", instead they use errr #K referring resolution in short as an advertisement. Yeah, it's quite annoying, but whatever carry on lol

On our 5.0mbps dsl, we can't have two computers running YouTube at 1080p at the same time ever. Our devices aren't junk either. If someone is watching YouTube at 1080p during non peak hours, another computer can be 480p without buffering. During peak hours we can't even get 1080p and 720p is the best, with a second computer being at 360p. Streaming to a TV is terrible. 720p best case scenario non peak, 360p with buffering during peak, and don't bother trying YouTube on another device if you're streaming to a TV. If someone is watching YouTube at 720p during peak, and I'm gaming online, the lag becomes unbearable.

Kinda feels like being fed scraps at times. Thankfully we can download some of what we'd otherwise stream all night for free in 1080p. Gotta stream YouTube though.

and why not download YouTube stuff?

For example I downloaded all the AVGN episodes ages ago on my HDD and can now watch them whenever I want at the highest quality.

Since I also have a 4k TV, I would download certain 4k videos (which are pretty big of course) and then put them on a flash drive and watch them on TV. Can't properly stream YouTube in 4k even though I should be able to with my connection.

You and I have actually discussed this in the past. The most recent videos I DL'd from YouTube were a bunch of Tom Green Show episodes, and a bit of Soul Train. Anyways, both the methods I used for the last 5-ish years no longer work. I'd definitely be interested in knowing what you are doing.

More on topic: For handhelds, 720p is great imo. For a nice big TV....The last games I played in 720p on a TV were Yakuza 5 and Dishonoured on the PS3 in spring/summer 2017. While I did notice the downgrade in resolution, a bit more so in Yakuza, it had no effect on my enjoyment. Definitely prefer a higher resolution though.

I wonder how my comment ended up in the same box as the person I was quoting? Let's see if it happens again.

we did? I cannot remember at all.

Anyway I'm using JDownloader 2 for stuff like that. Can pretty much load any type of media from any website.

Just copy a link and it will be added to the linkgrabber section where you can decide what to download (and the level of quality).

I'm still wondering how are they going to manage to keep everything afloat once 4k becomes the standard. The sheer amount of energy and processing power needed to keep Youtube afloat every hour could probably mantain a small country's internet needs for days.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
