Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony cancelling PAX East 2020 attendance due to coronavirus concerns

I suppose people will say "PAX East is now dead because Sony won't be there".

No PAX East is dead because of all the dead coronavirus victims.

In China around 500 million people are on lockdown...that´s HALF A BILLION, wrap your head around that number...the economy just stopped. South Korea, Japan and Italy are now putting cities on lockdown and cancelling events, this thing is just starting on a global scale and it´s not "just the flu".

It rally is, though. People overreacting to things because they have boring lives is nothing new.

Ok I get it it’s bad. It’s barely reported in other countries but that clearly isn’t stopping other companies and the conventions in general. I myself went to a major yearly auto convention last Monday. Life goes on. Now MS gonna keep the hype train rolling with GDC news and Sony still hush hush.

That said I do admire the level of loyalty it takes to be ok with this. I know on some level fans are hungry for the slightest bit of official news.

PS5 wasn't going to be at PAX so any news you think fans want wasn't going to happen.

And GDC isn't for consumers. Any official news would take place at a showing elsewhere.

Thinking that Sony is losing the hype train for next gen by dropping out of an event for current gen news, and for developers, requires some incredible mental gymnastics on your part.

So, no Playstation 5 reveal until September, when Tokyo Game Show 2020 will happen?

I have my doubts if the Coronavirus is really the only reason they are skipping those conferences.

You do realise that next gen consoles showing up at TGS is non-news?

It doesn't mean that is when PS5 news is coming. It's ridiculous that you even consider such a late reveal as an actual possibility.

I still see it as a snub to fans. Just like everything else they aren’t going to this year. GDC tends to have some news that lights up the forums regarding next gen, especially on a launch year. Ignoring that requires some mental gymnastics as well. Once again I admire the sheer loyalty it takes to support Sony on what I genuinely believe to be a string of snubs.

My guess is that Sony 1) wants to avoid talking about PS5 as long as possible for a host of reason, and/or 2) is starting to confront the possibility that they won't be able to ship PS5 this year due to supply constraints that may or may not be related to the virus.

I'll be interested to see if MS also avoids talking about the XSX and/or starts throwing out the virus as an excuse for anything.

Also, companies know that they can use this situation as an excuse if they miss sales targets, release dates, or for just about any other purpose they want. Sony may be milking it a bit here. Or, they may be honestly concerned. Given the extremely low risks involved with an event in this region, I'm thinking they're at least squeezing a little milk out.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Sony was struggling with the price before and now Coronavirus is going to not only limit their supply but may also raise the cost of inputs. I'm sure the health and safety of their staff is important too, but I think they are thinking they can't get the PS5 out in time at their target price so they are quietly avoiding events while blaming the virus.

Can we please stop this nonsense? It's beginning to feel like being in a meeting of the flat earth society...

A company has to look for the health of thir emplyees first and foremost in such a situation. If I were managing a large corporation like Sony, I'd also stop any flying around of "my" people, and meeting at conventions where you have no clue as to where the people would come from and what people they would have interacted with before.

A sense of logic and a positive attitude is enough to support Sony,i'm not waging a personal war against brands i do not like but i just like good practices across all brands.

Be more polite with VideoGameAccountant, he's a great analyst who predict that PS4 will never be above Wii... oh wait.

sales2099, you told me that you lost your hate . Don't let the inner fanboy takes control !

That being said, I'm not against a PS5 in 2021 : PS4 got so much games and exclusives this year that it would be a good idea to actually let the PS4 still shine this year. Do not put any PS5's shadow on it this year. PS4 doing 131,5 million lifetime sales minimum confirmed.

I get that some Xbox fans can't wait for the next generation since Xbox One is pretty much dead, but the next Xbox won't have exclusives game so why to hurry at the end ?

This is quite a petty reply. Resorting to calling out others as being fanboys 'loyal' is just a poor excuse to undermine what they have to say. If anything, it only shows how hollow your own words actually ring that you can't use anything with actual substance.

I'm actually working in the SEA region atm, and understanding why companies like Sony and Facebook are cancelling appearances comes from a perspective of the real threat the virus has on this region.

That said, there is a myriad of other ways that PS owners can expect to receive news. Youtube, Instagram and especially the PS Blog have all been viable ways to disseminate info. No one needs a showing at PAX for PS4 coverage. No one needs GDC to hear insider speak/ rumours to float around about what is up with the PS5.

I’m not the only one here saying Sony is milking the virus situation a little much. MS is attending GDC, they confirmed Turn 10 will be discussing next gen ray tracing. So that tells me something.

I’m just seeing MS being very active lately, with VGA, GDC, E3....and I seeing Sony making a lot of excuses to not be at these events. You know where I stand but cmon...you honestly telling me you ok with Sony being shy all of a sudden?

Milking? How are they milking the situation? Milking implies that they are gaining from not going to those events? If you see them gaining something, let me know cause I don't see it.

My understanding is that going to events helps towards building your brand, ergo everybody goes to events left and right. So again, explain how Sony is milking this virus, how are they like: Yeah, thank you virus cause without you we would have been forced to attend all those events and that would have been negative for us because...?

Saving money is the first reason lol. Second is dodging gaming journalists who are hungry....and I mean hungry for anything PS5 related. I don’t think they want gaming sites with headlines that just say Sony is dodging questions.

End of day MS is going to GDC. Turn 10 is discussing next gen ray tracing. Sony isn’t. MS been public about next gen since the VGA and Sony only showed a logo. I dunno, I guess I am allowed to speculate that Sony doesn’t want to be near Ms when they clearly aren’t ready to show anything and look weak next to the much more transparent MS.
