Geoff Keighley has announced that he is skipping E3 2020, and will not be producing E3 Coliseum this year. This will be the first time in 25 years that Keighley will not be participating in the famous video game trade show.

In a tweet from his personal Twitter account, Keighley announced that he will not be attending this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. "I have made the difficult decision to decline to produce E3 Coliseum. For the first time in 25 years, I will not be participating in E3."

It appears the decision has not come easy for Keighley. "I've debated what to say about E3 2020," he said. "While I want to support the developers who will showcase their work, I also need to be open and honest with you, the fans, about precisely what to expect from me."

"I look forward to supporting the industry in other ways and at other events in the future," he concluded.

Keighley answered further questions people posed on Twitter. When asked what elements factored into his decision, he replied "A ton of factors, I just don't really feel comfortable participating given what I know about the show as of today."

Meh, it’s still the single biggest gathering of top developers every year for the fans.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

What is going on? Unless it is replaced with something I want it to stay. It's fun seeing so many game announcements competing with each other at the same venue.

Makes sense really. Keighley is ambitious. The Game Awards are growing well under his watch, and if E3 continues to weaken, it creates more of an opening for him to expand, and turn his own event into the biggest in gaming.

May as well come to peace that it won't be anymore

You are aware more developers come other then Nintendo/Sony/MS right? You can’t name a bigger gaming convention that rivals e3 in total industry news and announcements.

Agreed. It also brings discussion and press like this. It'll be interesting how Game Awards go later this year and  who will show up to e3 next year if any changes are made... like being more open to the public.

Am I the only one who thinks this announcement will actually make E3 better?

Last year there were reports from people working at ESA that the situation there is very confusing, and that they're unsure if there will be an E3 after 2021 (I think), or what shape it will take. Had something to do with the companies that own ESA, but I forget the details now.

There was basically a war going on behind the scenes. One side, which included Sony, wants the show to become more fan focused and open it completely up to the public. The other side, which I'm assuming includes MS, wants it to stay as is, mainly for the press and insiders.

E3 has been slowly losing relevance for the last few years. I have been saying it for a while now. Once Nintendo switched to directs it was the beginning of the end. Then other publishers moved their conference just before E3. E3 just is not needed anymore. Nintendo has directs. Sony has the State of Play. MS has Inside Xbox. Tokyo Game Show exists. Gamescom. Pax and whatever else out there. Youtube, Social media. There are a million places and ways to deliver news now that didn't exist in 1995.

E3 was created out of a need in 1995. Games were at CES but were never the focus. They needed their own trade show as the industry was growing. In 2004 E3 was starting to be shown to the public for the first time with online streaming. Slowly it became less of a trade show and more into a consumer show. Now E3 is just kinda there out of habit. E3 is dying and that's fine. We don't need it anymore. Why spend hundreds of thousands to be at E3 with a booth and conference when you can either host your own event for cheaper or better press play on a video? I can see Nintendo leaving in the next year or two and reviving Spaceworld.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

So E3 will get another Reporter.. who honestly watches E3 to see Geoff?

I demand to see a female replacement to help support woman in gaming.
