Not necessarily. If it's possible they should, but if they have a great concept that doesn't work as a hybrid, they should do that.

Is there a choice? They can't compete with Playstation when it comes to strict home consoles.

Why couldn't they?

Because 3/4 times they've tried head to head they've gotten absolutely blown out by Playstation and the one time they won, the PS3 still almost caught up.

Not only them but Microsoft too. Playstation is just too daunting of a competitor to be beaten in the strict home console market.

The only real mistake they've made in like 25+ years in the business is the $600 PS3, other than that they don't give their competition much to take advantage of. If the PS3 wasn't $600 due to Blu-Ray it probably would've topped Wii sales but still managed 85 million on the low end for them.

What the hell are you talking about?

What reality are you living in?

PS1 routed the N64.

PS2 destroyed the GameCube.

PS3 nearly caught up to the Wii despite a terrible start.

PS4 destroyed the Wii U.

Nintendo cannot compete in this market. Throw in Microsoft also competing for table scraps from Sony's table and there is no market in strict home consoles for Nintendo.

The one you obviously don't live in.

Nintendo did not lose to the Playstation. That only happens in your fantasy.

Nintendo always lost to its own mistakes. What proves it: The WiiU vs the Wii. The N64 vs the SNES. The Gamecube vs the SNES.

Now look, the switch is a console (and a handheld, you know like light is matter and energy?), and it is kicking the Playstation's ass.

The PS4 is still going to sell 120-130 million units most likely, the Switch won't match that.

The fact is

PS1 (100 million units) vs. N64 (33 million units)

PS2 (150 million units) vs. GameCube (22 million units)

PS3 (85 million units) vs. Wii (100 million units)

PS4 (120-130 mill projected LTD) vs. Wii U (14 million units)

Now if I kick your ass in basketball 3/4 times like this you can make all the excuses about why you got beat and how it was your own fault, but no one watching is really going to buy that you didn't get your ass whupped.

Strict home console market, Nintendo does not fare well against Sony. They need the consolidation of their portable market to be competitive, plain and simple.

Unless Sony screws up with PS5 somehow, it'll be more of the same, PS5 will sell 100+ million units, and then MS somewhere well below that. There isn't room for a third home-only console.

My biggest gaming dream would be if Nintendo would make a new console as powerful as a ps5, not even that powerful, just 5x more powerful than a switch would be enough, and with a normal controller, as their pro controllers. I never play my switch out of the house. I tried taking it to work to play on the breaks, but its not feasible, I don't like to game if I don't have at least 1 hour free to do so, then the switch is unplayable outside with day light, if Im going to struggle with reflections and difficulty to see then Id rather read my kindle instead or pull out my phone and watch youtube.

The biggest difficulty on portable is that I'm used to play on a 120inch projector, going from 120inch to a 6inch screen is like going from 4k hdr to a black and white tv from the 60's, the experience and immersion is way way worse

So, as a 36yo adult, I really do not need portables specially in 2020 where I get good internet on my phone anywhere. Besides, the switch is not really that portable, doesn't fit my pockets, I could buy the LITE but that one doesn't work on my projector. Then the controller is not as confortable as playing on the pro controller.

I'd rather have Nintendo games looking as good as they can be, for example, on my wiiU, Zelda Twilight princess HD and Zelda Wind waker HD both look better than Zelda breath of the wild, just for the fact it has Anti Aliasing. So a powerful Nintendo console with great AA, better textures, better frame rates, and bigger worlds (100GB discs instead of 16GB sd cards) would make me very happy indeed.

If you need to ask this question, then you haven't seen Breath of the wild on a top PC in 4K, go check it, that's what we could have if Nintendo would make a traditional home console with modern specs, actually even better than that because Nintendo is good at optimizing their games for the hardware.

We all know that Nintendo Switch is a huge success. And some parts of this achievement are due to it being a handheld and a home console at the same time. Lots of people find it quite convenient.

But I was wondering... Now that Nintendo has fully recovered from the Wii U failure with the Switch, should they make their next-gen console another hybrid? I see people talking about a future "Switch 2" already, but is that what they should do from now? I mean, never split again?

What do you think?

The wiiU problem was not the hybrid thing, it was the huge controller, the difficulty of using 2 screens to play, the name, just sounded like a wii peripheral, the fact the base version only had 8GB drive when ps4 had 500GB at launch, also the price, all of that could have been fixed by just making another normal console like the gamecube.

It would have sold at least 30 million had they done a traditional console. The switch sells a lot because of the 3ds market, but mostly kids play portable consoles, they could just do a 3ds successor for that market.

Other reason for the switch success was great marketing. But mostly because they had Zelda and Mario odyssey at around launch, the wiiU took too long to get going never having a major game for ages, then people just lost the hype for it.

I fully believe a lot of us adults would prefer Nintendo to come up with a home console with PS5 specs, pro controller and launch with a new 3d Mario with graphics 5x better than odyssey and bigger open worlds. It would sell less than the switch, but it would sell to a lot more serious gamers. Example, my best friend wanted a switch but he just cant stand the Zelda graphics (jaggies everywhere), he has a PC and ps4 pro and when he comes at my house he says he cant even play, he says he wouldn't even have the game for free. That kind of gamers are the kind Nintendo could get back, gamers they lost after the gamecube and N64

You should make a poll

btw i can see Switch 2 in near future and Hybrid work well with Nintendo . It's time they stick with one brand and name Switch is a great name and brand.

PS1 routed the N64. DS took it portable and smashed PS1 and N64 combined with the same graphics.

PS2 destroyed the GameCube. 3DS took it portable and combined with a real Nintendo home console smashed the PS2, again, with similar graphics power.

PS3 nearly caught up to the Wii despite a terrible start. Wii managed the job singlehandedly with last gen graphics. PS3 beat 3DS and Vita separately but 3DS was on a mission to kick Sony out of the handheld space so had to sacrifice sales.

PS4 destroyed the Wii U. - WiiU did an amazing job of lulling the home console competitors into a false sense of security. Switch will repeat the portable and 'real home console' success and toast PS4 sales.

Nintendo cannot compete in this market. Throw in Microsoft also competing for table scraps from Sony's table and there is no market in strict home consoles for Nintendo. - Nintendo can win a graphics race but can't get the 3rd party support that PC-esque systems get without changing the whole computer/videogaming paradigm.................which they've done on multiple occasions.

Switch is clearly pivoting to a family of systems that all run the same software, on largely the same hardware á la Apples mobile device family.
So I think the future is less dependant on an actual Hybrid formfactor existing, (although I love it and think they should continue that formfactor going forward) than on the idea that all of their Hardware is going to run the same SoC, regardless of formfactor.

The unification of their HC and HH decisions has been really beneficial to Nintendos release schedule and the fact that the consumer gets to take the full HC experience on the go continues to be a major selling point in their favour. I don‘t see them giving those benefits up again.

So even if they split into HH and HC skus again at some point, I expect the internals to be largely identical between all formfactors going forward.

That being said, they should absolutely go forward with the hybrid as the lead formfactor, imo.

Indeed, even Iwata mentioned it back in the NX days.

Next device will be a Switch TV rather than the PRO some are campaigning for.

That would be absolute monetary suicide.

Even the biggest companies that tried to release a smart TV (Google, Sony) failed because it is just a bad product case.

Iwata never mentioned anything like a smart TV. He was comparing more with Apple products, such as the Apple TV, the ipad, iphone, ipod.

Smart TV is a whole television screen with intelligence inside. That can't be done by Nintendo because they will get massacred by Samsung and the other big ones, the same ones who beat Sony out of their own bread and butter.

If by smart tv you mean a smart box that plugs into the tv like an apple tv or a chromecast, then that would be okay.

Huh? Smart TV???

Switch TV as in a home console only form factor.
