Forums - Sony Discussion - Why is Sony America Kind of taking over the rest of Sony?

We hear more and more in the news that Sony America is becoming more and more important in all decisions taken by Sony. We hear all the time about the Sony big boss in America (Ironically I can't remember his name right now) and we hear about him way more than we hear about the big boss in Japan, Shuhei Yoshida and what should I say of Sony's big boss in Europe, I have never even heard his/her name. Is there even a Sony big boss in Europe?

This make no sense to me cause of all 3 major territories, the US is neither the biggest in terms of sales nor the original one. Sony is a Japanese brand and the territory where it sells the most is Europe, yet it's America that seems to pull the strings. Why? Is there a good reason for this?

When doesnt America try to take over everything?

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

I'd prefer if it stayed with Shuhei Yoshida tbh.
Either that or give it to someone in europe.

With the PS4, they said alot of the games were designed around things they knew their comsumers wanted (in europe).
Alot of their games turned out pretty great. Shuhei did a pretty good job running the show.

Americans often accuse the japanese of being "anti american" when it comes to buying products.
(while ignoreing the same is true in the US, xbox sells alot more than it would, if it wasnt hailed as being american)
(which is to say, theres americans that rather not buy products, if their not american)

Changeing leadership to some suit in the US branch, isnt going to help anything imo.
Neither will sales be better in the US for it.

Sie's new president Jim Ryan is from Europe he replace John Kodera who swaps positions with him and becomes vice president, also Andrew House before he left was from Europe ,there have been some changes among long term executives but that's to be expected, probably another reason it may feel that way is Sie is headquartered in the US .

Doesn't matter which flag they wear, it's all about results. If it's true that Sony America is running things then they're doing a pretty good job, that should be reason enough.

Yes but why are the headquarter in the US? And not just the headquarters, it seems decisions are taken in the US, like censoring nudity in some games, a US decision. Why didn't Sony Japan, supposedly the ones in charge say and do something about it? Same with Sony in Europe, I heard nowhere that European branches opposed Sony's American decisions.

All this shows that the power is clearly shifting towards America. And I wonder why? Sony is a private company so they don't need to go by politics or territory culture or history. And this brings a deeper question: Is this shift of power something forcefully taken by Sony America or are the other branches just ok with it and kind of submitting to this dynamic? If yes, why?

Because Sony's core audience is not Japan anymore.

Let's break this down into categories:

Global Political - We successfully avoided the rest of the world, after achieving freedom, until ww1 when our buttons were poked too much. Then we retracted only for the world to go so far down the drain that a country had a dumb enough idea to awake the sleeping giant. So we tried to be isolationist, but when we don't get involved everyone blows each other up and sometimes us. I think most Americans, even from both political parties, would love if we could go back to isolationist. But you know what would happen? China and North Korea would over run South Korea and Japan. Russia would take a whole lot more than Crimea. There would be Islamic terror groups all over Middle East and Africa butchering anyone who wasn't their specific sect of Islam, there would be drug cartels and communist repression all over South America. Yeah we screw up but the world (and our own American safety) would be in shambles if we just isolated ourselves again.

Economics - Europe depleted many of its natural resources on wars for thousands of years, as did Asia to an extent. Africa fell way behind in technology and never had empire building nations (even Zulu wasn't on par with European nations). America's rapid expansion from sea to sea allowed control over vast untapped resources. It is only fitting we are the global powerhouse we are now economically speaking as our resources are less depleted. We also were able to industrialize without facing constant invasion like the rest of the world due to ocean walls.

Cultural - When you dominate the first two, this tends to follow.

The funny part is, we are nowhere near dominate compared to the Statue of Nebuchadnezzar empires (Babylonians, Persian/Medes, Macedonians, and Romans). We have China and (used to have) USSR going toe to toe with us, those other nations made jokes of everyone else until their final years.

Look, stop trying to overthink very easy business decisions.

The current SIE is a merger of the Japanese SCE and the US Sony Networking departments. The networking department is responsible for this like PSN.

PSN is making Sony a ton of money. So logically, the move was sound.

Likewise, the Japanese game market is moving further away from console experiences, and the USA is very much a strong market with growth potential for the PS brand.

It's that simple (when reduced to very basic form).

Totally agree plus it's where most of the big Sony studios are.
