Forums - Gaming Discussion - Game of the decade: The 1990s

Ah yes, that legendary era still considered by many to be the golden age of gaming, where 2D was refined to a dazzling sheen, and the leap to 3D revolutionized the medium.

From the SNES and Megadrive/Genesis, to the PS1 and N64, to the Saturn, the PC, the opening years of the Dreamcast and everything in between, what game earns your nod for the best of the 1990s, and why?

Pretty obvious. It's Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. I don't think I need to say why but the game was truly revolutionary and just that good. A definitive shift in the franchise but also influential to many other games since.

Donkey Kong (Gameboy, 1994). It's just a very well designed game, with a great balance between puzzle solving and platforming.

But to be honest, the number of 90's games I've played is rather limited, since I was only born in 1999.

Metal Gear Solid 1

It's not even the best Kojima game of it's decade. Policenauts is and I'm not saying it is game of the decade.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Age of Empires 2.

Really it's impossible for me to pick one but I went with Age of Empires 2 because that was the first game that came to mind.

Probably a toss up between Super Mario World, FF7, and LoZ: OoT.

0331 Happiness is a belt-fed weapon

StarCraft: Brood Wars. It's easily the best real-time-strategy game to date and my favorite game of the era.

Personal favorite: toss-up between Planescape: Torment ("What can change the nature of a man?" is to this day pretty hard to beat as a main theme; great writng and characters, all rounded up by AD&D 2e) and Fallout 2 (probably closest, though still light years away, that video game RPGs got to pen&paper RPGs; good story, memorable characters, fantastic setting and great GURPS-ish alike RPG system).

Most influential: most likely Doom

Most ambitious: probably Ultima Online or TES: Daggerfall

EDIT: The "why" part added

Any other pick is cientifically proven to be wrong.
