I would like to know what happened to Dark Souls? Skyrim somehow beat it in the rankings, but Skyrim has aged badly.

I was wondering about Dark Souls too. I was happy to see Demon's Souls tie with Dark Souls--I'm in the minority that prefers DeS--but surprised Dark Souls was in the 80s.

So what other glorious bastard gave the Baten Kaitos games a high ranking with me? Whoever you are, we got Origins almost to the top 250, so the top 25% of the list! The only other game to rank higher with just two votes was Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Sekiro must have beaten the crap out of too many people. Only two votes? How many controllers did people break playing this?

Absolutely amazing effort making this thread and compiling all the data!

Thanks for this mZuzek, the effort you  put into this event is always highly appreaciated.

Flawless top 2

Chrono Trigger in the top 5 where it should be

Good positions for Xenoblade, Nier Automata DQ8 higher than I thought it would be

Always preferred FFVI over FFVII.

Suikoden II too low.

This list actually feels less Nintendo oriented than the last few ones.

Take a look at the SNES top 5.

Super Mario World
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
Super Metroid
A Link to the Past

These five games are absolute classics! Fun to play in the 90's. Fun to play in 2020. Will be fun to play in 2040 too! Some games just age better than others!

I'll never forget the year Xenoblade X scored higher than Persona 5, lmao.

Good job raccoon man!

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

PC mainly, grew up on them. If Amstrads count, that's where I started. Discovered space quest on that and mostly played Wolf 3D on my dads laptop.

Chrono Trigger got #2 and #3 in the first two years, but since the highest had been #8, so, yeah. Actually, JRPGs in general went way up this year, what with all the Final Fantasy games near the top and what not.

I was really pleased for Hollow Knight too - it came agonizingly close last year (#101), but this time it didn't just break in, it smashed its way all the way through to the top 50. Celeste also went way up, having missed out on the top 200 last year.

You can probably thank me for that. I put Hollow Knight in my top six after a single playthrough, because I loved it so much. :D

massive respect and thanks for all the hard work!!!

absolutely stoked at celeste appearing so high, my personal #2 - almost gave it first over BotW. also thoroughly impressed with FE: three houses, not only did it place highly, but it won GOTY!

my main disappointment is that astral chain and bayonetta are so damn low. cmon guys, show platinum some love :(

I'll  play Astral Chain sometime this year. Bayonetta games have never managed to beat DMC3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma or God of War (PS4) as far as hack n' slashes go for me.

Nice list. Thanks mZuzek for the hard work. Disheartening that so many of my games have only one vote: mine. At least my #1 isn't dying alone with only one vote.

But there are funny coincidences: I have Monkey Island on #19, that put it at #621 in the result. But at the same place also turns up Monkey Island 2, a similarly great game. Also onnly one vote, so someone else had it in the same place as I, #19. I don't know who, it doesn't show in the official thread, so it must be in a list sent directly to mZuzek.

Rol is the only one beside me having Pandora's Tower on the list, so treat yourself y'all, it is a great game.

Well, if you would just accept that EO4 is better than EO Untold we'd manage to get EO to break into the top #100! ;)

Brave Dungeon got robbed.

Also disappointing to see only 13 Nintendo games in the top 20, because games from Squaresoft/Square-Enix are being given way too much credit. People should really check out other JRPGs, that will make them reconsider how good Square games really are.

Note to myself: Make next year's list have at least 5 Atelier games in the top 10.

1992-1996 Square is the best. Every Squaresoft game after that is just a little worse than the last. As far as Square-Enix goes they only have games make my list because Level 5, and Yoko Taro happened to have worked for them at some point in their careers. IMO the best traditional RPG Square did this decade was DQ11, but that's just a retread of DQ8. A glorious retread mind you, but a retread nonetheless.

An embarrasing list to be honest, to many gamers stuck inside the Nintendo bubble. Respect all peoples opinions, but VGChartz in a nutshell.

Do you play Nintendo games? What games do you play?

Farsala said:

Reality is more people probably have a bias for games like League of Legends, but VGC users only gives it 2 votes. I am quite surprised someone else voted for it.

Yeah, tons of people focused on PC centric titles, or western games. If anything there's a western bubble that a lot of gamers never break free from.

Im very glad at these results, most of my favorite games did well and Hollow Knight is in the top50 right where it belongs.
The only think that stroke me as weird is Suikoden II not breaking into the top100, which is telling that more people should play it for it is one of the greatest RPGs ever, but most the important FFs did make it to the top 50, which is another thing im glad for. All in all the top 100 in full of amazing games.
I appreciat the effort @mZuzek I had no idea of the presentation of the analysis/results and time involved in this (its my first time doing it) had I known I wouldnt have taken too long to update my list.

Suikoden II comes so close to making my list. There's just too many good games, and specifically too many good JRPGs out there. I might give it a second playthrough this year though.

As above, reply not working, or is it?

Right? By my count, 58 titles in the top 100 were not published by Nintendo. That's more than any year since 2011. This was one of the biggest and most diverse in taste Greatest Games threads ever for VG Chartz.

I'm pretty sure that I'm singularly responsible for like 30 or 35 games making the 1,130 list anyway. My tastes are nothing if not unique. Also, my top 50 included ONE Nintendo game (Super Metroid) and I thought Death Stranding was the best new game released this year, so more evidence that I'm totally in line with prevailing VGC opinion!! Which itself is totally in line with average gamer opinion, as evidenced by the fact that I don't think anyone voted for Fortnite, which is only like the first or second most-played video game in history.

In all seriousness, people's preferences for Nintendo games this year and in 2011 and such seem to coincide with time frames in which Nintendo's platforms were dominant in terms of sales. In other words, prolly lots of go-along, fair-weather fans here, just saying.
