Well... that's surprising. Considering how poorly the original performed I was expecting the Switch release to do a lot better. I guess the WiiU wasn't the reason the game flopped after all.

Nah, it failed cos it's a kinda crappy, unappealing game, which is why it will sell poorly on the Switch too, despite almost everything selling well on the platform.

My brother played through it on Wii U and it was extremely cringey.

It's actually a good RPG and the actual reason for the lower opening is because that's all Nintendo shipped it's sold out in Japan and on Nintendo's store.

Pokemon Sword/Shield passes Splatoon 2 at retail this week.

So it is now the second best selling Switch game in Japan. How long until it passes Smash to become #1?

Pokemon has 210k to go at retail to pass Smash, so it could take 8-14 weeks depending on how low Pokemon goes in the following weeks. But with digital Pokemon very well could've over taken Smash already, we'll know next week.

Good or bad's really a matter of opinion, more power to you if you enjoy it.

As for the lower shipments I'd say Nintendo is aware of its limited appeal and didn't want to overship a game that doesn't have much sales potential.

Point is it puts a different context on what you replied to as he said he was expecting it to open higher than the Wii U version had the shipment been higher it very likely would have been going by it being sold out you can't sell anymore if the isn't stock it's also likely the opening is higher when digital is accounted for.

As for the game itself common opinion is that it's a good game it also reviewed well so quality is not really an issue for it.

The Switch is literally the only console alive at this point.

I know from experience that you're unwilling to have a civil debate, so I'm just gonna let the game's sales speak for themselves.

Regardless of quality the main issue I see with Tokyo Mirage is that it has a very, very limited audience. It lacks a strong voice or identity.

It carries a lot of baggage from the crossover standpoint, it doesn't appeal to SMT fans in terms of tone, designs or setting, doesn't have enough Fire Emblem at a glance and even the game itself only touches those elements at an extremely shallow level, one can't easily tell which Performa is supposed to represent X FE character, and outside of those it doesn't really appeal to the taste of other series from Atlus, so it is kind of screwed in that sense for fans of these series.

At that point the appeal comes from seeing the Atlus and/or Nintendo trademark and trust that for the average consumer.

The idol stuff I don't think helps it a lot, pretty much fighting an uphill battle against other idol brands and games that are more accessible and the like, TMS situation being much worse with its lackluster marketing.

And the name is pretty terrible, just the cherry on top of its appeal issues.

Was to be expected, since it got undershipped.
