Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: 1st party Xbox games will be cross-gen for "next year, two years"

I'm just stating facts here buddy. Apex Legends and a ton of multiplatform games simply can't be scaled down and ported to the Switch. And Halo Infinite will be an X1 game...

The game will be released alongside a new Xbox One-compatible console known as Xbox Series X. Although initially implicated to be exclusive to the console, the franchise's development director Frank O'Connor stated in August 2019 that Infinite was being developed for Xbox One title and that they were "building it so it plays and looks fantastic" on the platform, but suggested that it would have enhancements when played on Xbox Series X.[22] In January 2020, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty additionally confirmed that the studio had no immediate plans for Xbox Series X exclusives on-launch, preferring to phase out compatibility with older hardware over a longer-term period similar to PCs.

Sony and MS will simply have different approaches next gen and which one is better depends if you're planning on buying a next gen console at launch or not. I just find it weird that, after getting an ass whoopin of biblical proportions this gen, MS doesn't just pretend this gen never happened and rush into next gen by showcasing the superior graphics of the Series X.

Lol is this tour first time hearing corporate PR? You expect him to say the Xbox One version will be a gimped mess? Moving on...this is too easy.

Making a LOT of assumptions about launch adopters. Assuming they don’t buy the next gen because of cross gen availability is hilarious. You know people could buy the console knowing they would be investing in power down the road (going by your logic). Some just want the latest console and best versions. Most just want quality games.

Sony taught MS to be more gamer friendly with said ass whooping. They don’t screw over late adopters. Live Gold free games is 4 compared to PSNs 2. Elite controller is the most quality controller on the market. Sony playing a hilarious game of catch up with backwards compatibility. Xbox hardware will now have the power advantage....even going by your logic that still means for the majority of the gen Xbox will be the best place to play console games. Not to mention Game Pass has day 1 exclusive availability where as Sony just prefers you give them more money upfront. Oh and 15 studios pumping out games much faster then Sony’s studios now.

So yes MS has learned, just in a much better way then your way of thinking.

Sure, it's all PR and the Series X version of Halo Infinite will be a totally different game with better ai and whatnot... I bet you're not using that same logic for the ps5 versions of TLOU2 and ghost of tsushima. Like I said, if you're fine with spending $600 on a console and then having to wait 2 years before you finally get to see what it can do, fine man. But if I buy a next gen console, I want to play next gen games the moment I buy the thing.

Now I am not that naive into thinking that all major franchises will be next gen exclusives in the first year, but it usually are the first party games that are. Like I said, it just feels like MS will again drop the ball because they can never just focus on their console and having the best games on it. You would have thought MS learned their lessons from the time they had circus clowns and people painting elephant asses on stage with Kinect. But apparently not... This time around they are so focused on pushing Game pass that they seem to be forgetting why they are launching a 12Tflops console in the first place.

Ok let’s keep this simple...I’ll pretend you are right.

They won’t take full advantage. Still will be the best version. Still could be very much quality games. And MS gonna def hold back some gems for after the 2 year grace period. After the grace period, all games 1st and 3rd will look and play best on Xbox. Those 2 years gonna fly by just like how 7 years flew by this gen.
So really....if this is the only narrative you got, I look forward to mopping the floor with you on this site in the years ahead

1st Party 2020 releases are Halo Infinite, Gears Tactics, Flight Simulator, Bleeding Edge, Grounded, Ori WoW, Battletoads, Tell me Why. Wasteland 3, Psychonauts 2, Minecraft Dungeons being multiplat but still first party.....get out of your Sony bubble.

More powerful console, cheaper console, Game Pass is superior and better value, backwards compatibility mattered to MS for years before Sony decided to care. And more games and genre diversity in 2020 going forward.

Hey if you want to play on a sub powerful console and services that are playing catch up to ones MS had for years because Sony gave you some nice exclusives to shut you up...then go ahead :)

Fine dude. If 2 whole freakin' years feel like nothing to you and you care more about services and if MS had BC first, instead of actual next gen games, then good for you. I'm just saying that the masses probably won't share you opinion. It's a waste of Tflops and it will be a hard sell for the series X in that first 2 years if it's gonna be $100 or $200 more expensive.

The “masses” just want good games. If Halo Infinite gets a 90+ on metacritic that will speak much louder then it being cross gen. If you take nothing away from this conversation take that at least.

And once we see comparison vids from base X1 to Series X I look forward to showing you it’s far more then mere resolution and FPS enhancements. Till November.

And for the majority of the gen, Xbox will be the best place to play :)

Early adopters are getting these systems regardless. They aren't going to care about any of this crap. What killer apps did PS4 and Xbone have at launch? CoD Ghosts? Ryse and Knack? Incredible.

TLOU2 and ghost of tsushima will probably also get a 90+ Metacritic. But I still think it's a shame that they aren't designed as full blown ps5 games. Obviously, they'll be great but I'm still more curious to see what Horizon Zero Dawn 2 will look like if that's a ps5 launch exclusive. What strikes me odd is that you're 100% convinced, Halo Infinite's Series X version will be so much more than just better resolution and FPS. Especially, when MS themselves said it's designed for the X1 first and it will just have some enhancements. To me that just sounds like wishful thinking and it shows that you DO care if Halo Infinite or any other MS exclusive takes advantage of the next gen hardware or not.

Basing this optimism on what exactly?

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

____________

Best case scenario the games are designed for Series X and the devs have a dedicated team downgrading it for XB1. Worst case scenario the improvements aren’t much beyond resolution and FPS.

Doesn’t affect multiplats/3rd parties. Doesn’t affect the quality. MS gonna hold back gems till after. And like every other generation exclusives in the first 2 years don’t look as good as exclusives in the 5/6th year. The majority of the gen and multiplats belongs to Xbox in terms of power.

So really, your argument isn’t a very good one. Thank you for your concern, but we Xbox gamers will manage :)

Xbox will be the best place to play next gen? Do you work at Microsoft? Share more secret info with us.

Well it looks like it will have more choice. Series X for the power and Lockhart for the non 4K crowd. PC versions and Xbox One support for the late adopters.

Then you have Game Pass which is insane for the value it brings you and the top tier gems on the service. Backwards compatibility, Xcloud, the elite controller for the competitive gamer, and now they are pumping out more 1st party games per year then Sony. Sure they do this by making smaller budget titles along with AAA games but end result is more exclusives and more genre diversity.

Just my opinion. Nothing wrong with MS learning from losing this gen

It's just like I said. Ms isn't even trying to get the best games possible out on their console, they are purely focused on Gamepass and their services. We will see how that'll will work out for them, but I'm predicting another ass whooping from Sony.
