Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: 1st party Xbox games will be cross-gen for "next year, two years"

I'm only speculating, of course. But after the whole Kinect fiasco this gen it just seems like MS is again going to drop the ball again by trying to have their games on as many platforms as possible, effectively nullifying the whole point of having the most powerful console. I think the problem with MS is that their main focus is too much on their software services and delivering great games comes second. With Sony it's the other way around. They are an entertainment company first and put a lot of resources into their games. That's why they totally destroyed MS with their exclusives.

I mean Guerilla games just expanded their office and now has a staff of over 400 people. Meanwhile, MS has been talking about "the Initiative" like its some kind of Illuminati of the gaming world, with some of the most talented developers on board for years now. Look closer, though, and you'll see that it only has 30 people working there and it's all smoke an mirrors. For years we have been hearing about MS buying studios and that change will come. But the Xbox brand is now almost 20 years old and they still only managed to deliver 3 AAA exclusive ip's, Halo, Gears and Forza. So excuse me if I don't share your optimism.

I’m sorry but a lot happened since 2013....the Xbox leak even has no TV input connection like Xbox One had. There is no trace of anything non gaming related on Xbox going forward. By comparison Sony still pursues VR....I guarantee you fans would prefer if those resources went into making more traditional exclusives.

Your argument that more choice is bad is funny, but in a bad way. If you want power, get the Series X. You want a secondary console or don’t have a 4K display, get a Lockhart. Aren’t a early adopter...MS will keep making Xbox One versions. Don’t like Xbox...get the PC version. Sorry but MS is a much more gamer friendly company then Sony now.

I would agree that this whole gen MS making great exclusives was not their priority. Well you seem to not care what they been doing lately but their 1st party is sizeable enough that yes, it is also their top priority. Rare, Playground, Obsidian, 343 have also been staffing up. I hope we see something from the Initiative at e3.

MS bought these new devs only what, over a year ago? And we all ready have Grounded and Hellblade 2 announced, with Rares Everwild.....how many exclusives did Sony announce so far? The PS5 font style just didn’t excite me by comparison.

Sorry but your logic is absurd by how out of touch and outdated it is.

I'm a fan of PSVR.

I’m happy for you. Given the adoption rate I’d imagine most would prefer traditional exclusives. I mean I know people who like Kinect....doesn’t mean they were the majority.

Sure thing.

PSVR 5M owners on a 100+M PS4 owners certainly indicates most would prefer Sony invested the money elsewhere or at least wouldn't care if Sony dropped it.

I love the PSVR and even then, it's not like Sony has been dropping the ball with their exclusives this gen, MS has. I'm also not just talking about this gen, they have failed to build hardly any AAA exclusives since the original Xbox launched almost 20 years ago. I'm not saying choice is a bad thing, I'm just saying that the beauty of consoles is that developers can take full advantage of the hardware. And that's not going to happen if those games are build around the limitations of a  8 year old tablet cpu or a 4Tflops Lockhart.

We will see what the studios MS has bought will come up with. But if you objectively look at them, they are mostly Indy developers and a couple of developers who made ok'ish games. Maybe I'm wrong but just name me 1 really great any of those studios made with the same mass appeal of something like: Spiderman, TLOU, GOW, Horizon Zero Dawn?

For the final time launch exclusives never take anywhere near full advantage of the hardware. MS developers wouldn’t be 2 years behind...they are getting experience like anybody else. They clearly know how to scale their games and therefore the weaker next gen Xbox won’t hinder the Series X.

And pretending to care that their exclusives won’t look their best...like cmon. You don’t strike me as a concerned citizen for Xbox gamers.

Otherwise you are right in that we clearly have to wait and see. But you should check yourself when you try to claim MS isn’t focused on their games going forward.

Dude, even current gen games are getting delayed because the Xone, apparently can't handle them... The game will now be scaled down across the board just so it can still run on the Xone... How is this not going to be an issue for game development on the Series X, when it's already happening with Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk 2077 delayed because of current gen consoles, new source claims.

According to a Polish insider Borys Niespielak, the main reason for Cyberpunk 2077 delay lies in current-gen consoles, which are reportedly not powerful enough to run the game properly. Speaking in a podcast, Niespielak says that the original Xbox One console is not powerful enough to run the game properly and apparently, Cyberpunk 2077 performance on the console is "extremely unsatisfactory". Borys' sources confirmed that if "this problem with Xbox has not been solved by January 2020, the release date must be postponed."

Sorry to barge in but I think you are wasting your time with goopy20. Some people just see what they want to see.

Woah, this might be the first time the Xbone version of a game has a lower resolution or less effects than the PS4 and PC versions. Oh wait it's been happening all gen lol

Even ignoring that this is purely a rumor, this doesn't mean anything for XSX or even other current gen games. It means CDPR didn't optimize well enough and need more time. Why would this be an issue by default for MGS games next gen when they might have bigger teams and less platforms to worry about the game running on?

Furthermore you continue to ignore the fact that developers routinely developer for the higher spec and scale down. Your own example here of Cyberpunk is just another situation of that exact thing happening. Please stop the concern trolling.

So you are comparing a 3rd party developer to 1st party developers who have far more experience to scale their exclusives in their ecosystem? K

Your concern for Xbox gamers is really moving...I can really feel you being genuine lol. Stop concern trolling, it’s not a good look on you and nobody is buying it.

Doesn’t change anything I said. Launch exclusives always scratch the surface of what a console can do. And if a game is amazing like how Zelda was cross gen, then gamers won’t care that it’s cross gen.

Edit: If anything, this only means that the PS5 will hold back the Series X in 3rd party multiplats, especially ones Sony pays for exclusive marketing rights.

If it's just a matter of lowering the resolution and cut down on some effects, then why you think they would delay the game? It's simply that, in it's current state, the game can't run on X1. Now they need to go back to the drawing board and alter (or remove) entire parts of the game across all platforms. Keep in mind cross gen games are always designed to give the exact same gameplay experience across all platforms and it has to run in at least 900p on X1.

It's not exactly new that developers show their game how they want it to be like and release an almost different game entirely. People keep mentioning AC Unity and how it could have easily been ported to the ps3 without the crowd mechanics. The fact is that that game was too ambitious for it's own good even when skipping last gen consoles. This is AC Unity could have been, but hardware limitations didn't allow it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptQ-XqaoHGI . In the end they basically had to cut whole levels and the multiplayer features out of the game and that wasn't even a cross gen title.
