Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: 1st party Xbox games will be cross-gen for "next year, two years"

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/01/xbox-series-x-wont-have-first-party-exclusives-for-a-while/

From Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios.

"As our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices," Booty explains. "We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox between now and [Series X] that they feel that they made a good investment and that we’re committed to them with content."

Well it’s one year before it’s out, so I wouldn’t expect any then.

Personally I don’t care if the games are cross gen, it takes years to really start seeing games taking advantage of a console anyway. Outside of graphics, which can be there day one even if the games are also on Xbone.

There's still time for a 180. Dunno bout a 360 though.

Not very smart in my opinion. It most likely means that they'll be starting with Xbox One S and working their way up. It already was reported that some devs didn't like developing for Lockhart and Series X. I can't imagine 1st party studios being too happy with also having to develop for an outdated piece of tech instead of moving on to next-gen fully like most of Sony's 1st party studios are.

Well for starters it was just a rumor. Secondly lol if you don’t believe devs will be making games cross gen for years as is the case every gen.

The best looking games on the Series X will probably be 3rd party titles if true. Jaguar cpu cores are one hell of a lowest common denominator.

To be fair. Ms seems to be aiming at Indy to AA new games aside from the big 3 and maybe hellblade but who knows when that's coming. I see no issue if thats the case.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

I find it ironic we are discussing this, because back then at the TGA awards, Microsoft was aplauded by showing a game that obviously looked only next gen and Sony was received with "meh" comments for showing (although it was Gearbox, not Sony) a cross-gen looking game with just better resolution and more fps....

Now Microsoft tells you its next console is going to be cross-gen only (at least 1st party games) in 2020 and 2021 at least, while Sony will probably show PS5 only games during that period (nothing official but it's what most people is expecting), and the same people now say that is a good thing for Microsoft too. Personally, i don't understand this tactic. If XBO was dominating like PS4 is doing that would make sense, but that's not what is happening. XBO is going to barely sell outside of USA and UK this year. What you really want, is to attract new players, and showing what a new machine is capable to do that the competion can't is still the better way to do so...in my opinion.

As a PC/PS4 only gamer, these comments don't make want to buy a new XBOX to be honest.

1. If Series X and potentially Lockhart are treated as the lead platforms, then it won't really matter. It just means extra work will have to be done to make a functional Xbox One ports. Maybe they can have 3rd parties work on ports for Xbox One, which is common practice for scaled back ports.

2. Some of the most impressive games this gen have worked fairly well on Switch even when using PS4/X1 as the lead. Games using UE4 have shown to scale well between platforms for example. Reducing effects, texture quality, resolution, frame rate and other aspects can greatly reduce spec requirements.

3. Supporting X1 is still crucial to maintain Game Pass subscribers.

4. Two years is not that significant in a gen. The best years of the PS4 and X1 really aren't the first two years, certainly not in a technical perspective.

By big three I think you mean Halo, Gears and Forza?

I don't know what the scale of Hellblade 2 is but it will certainly have AAA visuals.

Outer Worlds is a AAA game, I would expect more of that from Obsidian down the road.

There is evidence a Playground Games open world RPG is happening.

I suspect MS bought numerous studios hoping to make bigger projects with them, but we will wait and see.
