Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Rumor: Nintendo plans to launch a new Switch SKU in 2020 - UPDATE: Nintendo says no

What will the new Switch model be?

Switch 2 4 5.80%

Switch Pro 33 47.83%

Switch XL 6 8.70%

Switch TV 9 13.04%

Switch Mini (clamshell) 0 0%

Something else 6 8.70%

No new SKU in 2020 11 15.94%

Total:69

A $149 Switch TV is definitely possible - the entire NVIDIA system-on-chip, including the 4GB of RAM, is maybe ~$40 to make. So you take aware the LCD touchscreen and even double the storage to 64GB - throw in a Switch Pro controller - and yes $149 would still give them a healthy profit margin. But I don't think that's it...

Instead it has to be a Switch Pro (or Super Switch as I really hope Nintendo calls it and others suggested). Another die-shrink of the NVIDIA SoC to 7-nm and double the RAM to 8GB (so, half as much as PS5/Xbox Series X is expected to have, but same as PS4/Xbox One) would make for a very powerful handheld. It would work no differently than PS4>PS4 Pro; all Switch games work on all systems, but can run at higher resolutions/better textures/shadows/etc on Switch Pro. This would be extremely easy for developers because they already always target two different power profiles now - docked and undocked. This would just be adding in two more - Super-speed docked and Super-speed undocked (made up terms on my part lol but you get what I'm saying).

Nintendo's new lineup for Holiday 2020 then could look as such:

$199 Switch Lite

$299 Switch

$399 Switch Pro

Around the Network

If it isn't portable, will that mean Nintendo is back in the home console business?

What generation will it belong to?

I question the logic behind a Switch Pro.

Remember the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X have one very clear agenda in transitioning users to 4k experiences and using that as a selling point.

Switch Pro will do the same? If not are we expecting a "premium" console for a 1080p experience with slight better shadows? It sounds extremely niche and uncompelling to me, especially if we look at the games that are doing the most numbers on the Switch (pokemon/mario kart etc). Not something they'd market a whole new expensive SKU around imo.

With a Switch TV you have a cheaper price penetrative model for people who just want to play nintendo games with their family for cheap. Something the Switch Lite cannot offer.

I think and hope it will be a $149 Switch TV.

Which probably also allow them to increase the clockspeed for a more consistent home console experience.

More consistent what? Increasing clock speed won't do anything if the games are meant to work with the base power.

Resolution/framerate.

For games which are locked, a patch.

Many games run better and more consistency on Xbox One S over the original hardware and Nintendo could obviously push this further to be a notable feature but not a key selling point. Just a cherry on the top.

Don't see the point of another model at this point unless it's basically the long rumored Pro model.

Magnesium body only really makes sense for better heat dissipation, the need for that only arises from higher performance.

Switch Generation 2 would be the smartest move; especially if they push it out with a higher-performance Breath of the Wild 2 and a Super Mario Galaxy 3 on the horizon. Take advantage of the scalability feature and generate the greatest amount of excitement.

I can see Nintendo almost certainly doing 25m+, perhaps 30m+ year if they push that.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I'm thinking $199-229 with a pro controller included

Definitely $199 minimum for a hypothetical Switch TV, but such a console may as well be modified and ditch the SSD storage in favor of an HDD because portability doesn't need to be considered anymore. For example, Switch TV with a 500 GB HDD and Pro Controller for $249-279.

Hmm yeah interesting, I wonder if they will make a TV-only Switch. I'm guessing there have gotta be a few million gamers who like the Switch but don't ever take it outside their home, and for those that have already bought a Switch might even buy a TV-only version if it gave superior performance on top notch games like Zelda. If Nintendo did go this route, I agree that they'd probably sell it for $250 with a much larger hard drive, and offer whatever slight upgrades needed to make something like Zelda run at peak performance.

I think it's more likely we'll see a premium version of the OG Switch though, rather than a TV-only version. Bigger hard drive, slightly improved performance, maybe bigger higher res screen, with the battery capacity of the updated model of the original. The only thing is where would they price this? Would they finally give Switch a price cut and put the premium version at $300? Or would they keep Switch at $300 since it is selling faster than anything since Wii/DS and sell the premium one for like $350? I feel like a higher price point than $300 would kinda kill sales. My guess is a price cut to $250 for the original, and a premium version with more disk space, slightly improved performance, and bigger better screen for $300.

You are forgetting what makes the Switch special - it's a handheld and a console. I focused on just the SoC improvements in my first post - but remember a Switch Pro model would be better in other ways. How about a 7" OLED 1080p panel - a MASSIVE upgrade over the 6.5" 720p LCD in the base Switch, and completely doable from a price-point perspective in a $399 model.

As a current Switch owner, I would be tempted to upgrade based on a bigger 1080p OLED panel alone, even with the same processing power lol

Perhaps better sounding stereo speakers? Stronger HD rumble? Heck, maybe even built-in 4G LTE? Lots of routes Nintendo could take that would make it worthwhile to hardcore gamers, on top of a SoC power increase.

A full $100 more for a moderately larger screen and a 1080p display when most games don't even run at 1080p undocked would be a pretty big rip off. You need to have some kind of performance increase to justify that cost.

I think it's extremely unlikely that Nintendo will release a $399 successor/Pro model in the same year that the PS5/XBX release instead of re-running 2006 and doing to the 4K twins the same thing they did to the HD twins.
Half price, budget home console with Switch Sports and a (spiritual) sequel to the best Zelda ever made would be a great way for Nintendo to welcome the new consoles in.
