They would be making more money if it was dockable. Terrible business.

But then it would directly compete with the original SKU instead of indirectly competing/complementing it.

That would be my guess as well... If the Lite did exactly the same thing as the original, what would be the incentive to buy the more expensive.

Interesting. I though they would have only the base and lite models for 2020, wait until Jan-March 2021 to release the last revision, and move to Switch 2 for Spring 2022.
Maybe this one is the supposedly "Pro" version?

Having the ability to dock, but not having a dock would still make the difference between the models. Nintendo could sell docks separated in this case.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

I wouldn't be surprised if this were true. Nintendo needs to do something to try and steal some of the thunder away from the Xbox Series X and PS5 this year.

And if true, my guess is just a more powerful hardware when docked and hardly any difference on portable side of things.

A TV model is *possible*, especially after the Lite, but it also makes less business sense then a Lite. The Lite serves to fill the void left by the 3DS with a smaller, cheaper, more portable experience, and most Switch users who don’t use Switch in both docked and portable modes use it exclusively as a portable. That said, definitely a market for it, and I don’t think a $150 price tag is an impossibility.

A Switch Pro, targeted towards the gaming enthusiast, is definitely the most likely new SKU. A larger 1080p screen that removes the bezel, some 2K/4K support, same joycons and dock, all for a $400 price tag. They could even sell the tablet stand alone for a cheaper price.

A Switch XL is impractical, given they’d have to make new joycons and docks to go with it.

Most likely it is just a normal Switch with some improvements like longer battery life, a slightly better CPU and improved joy-cons that no longer have the drift problem.

This one has already been released in 2019

Yeah, I know.  But I think they might just do the same thing again.

A Switch hybrid Pro doesn't convince me; due to technical limitation the improvement would be noticeable but rather irrelevant compared to what competing platforms are offering. Plus it would make the jump to next-gen Switch harder some years later, still due to technical limitations.

If Nintendo releases a TV model it shouldn't be an "affordable version", but rather the premium version that supports things such as 4k 60fps. This is what home console enthusiasts are looking for right now. And as a Nintendo player I would be tempted to play BOTW in 4k, on the other hand I would literally have zero reasons to buy another SKU with the same performance as the current one. The lower end market is already covered by the Switch Lite.

Switch VR is far less unreasonable than it sounds...if they equip an (hypotetical) Switch TV version with some local video streaming capabilities, they could pair it with an headset and sell it in bundle (like the WiiU console was paired with its controller). That way you would have 1 product that is both a Switch TV / Pro and a stand alone VR device. Is it feasible? I think so. If you consider the substantially lower graphical baseline of Switch games (compared to baseline PS4/XB1) you wouldn't need very expensive hardware to meet the higher rerquirements of 4k and VR. Considering a mid-range VR system (like the Oculus Go) is already avaliable for 200$ I would expect they could sell such system for about 350$.

Does it make sense? Yes, VR is a new market to develop and it's an opportunity to further differentiate the Switch product line from the incoming next-gen consoles. Even if Sony have their own VR device already they're actually in worse position to counter act. Their customers are now focused on the next-gen upgrade and PS5 will be an high-end device; this means a new improved VR headset would need to be high-end (and expensive as well) in order to meet next-gen expectations. Not to mention Nintendo has the most important advantage: games. Think of Metroid Prime, Mario Kart, Spatoon, Arms, Wii Sports, Luigi's Mansion in VR...there is so much potential in terms of software and the media buzz would be huge.

I'm not saying this is what they're going to do, but it would be a great move imo.

Nintendo needs to do absolutely nothing regarding those consoles until 2022.

That doesn't make any sense. A console cannot compete with itself. It would be like the ds lite and xl, or regular 3ds and xl. $199 real switch lite and $249 regular switch would be selling a lot more than fake lite at $199 and switch at $299.

Maybe it would be XL v Lite but it could just as easily be DS Phat v DS Lite. Who says the XL and Lite didn't compete against each other?

Does this theoretical 'real Switch Lite' dock with improved res/fps? Is that even possible?

So the Switch that doesn't dock is indirect competition for the dockable Switch but Switch is direct competition to PS5/XSX? Great.

I never took any economy classes so I don't know the difference between overlap, indirect competition, direct competition, competition or market shifts and I can't think of any simple car analogies that will make sense of everything. It's made more difficult by people believing consoles aren't consoles while dedicated gaming PCs are.
