Forums - PC Discussion - Ampere rumour

If only Nvidia drivers weren't so terrible on Linux. I honestly don't believe Ampere will widen the gap with a potential Navi 2 tbh.

Let's just hope that the "50%" performance improvement will not just be for Ray Tracing.

I wonder if Nvidia will base a Soc chip on Ampere or Orin for Switch 2.

And how does this news change that you will be able to play 4k PS5 and Series X games with "old" GPUs on PC?

And who said PC gamers don't want to upgrade to RTX 2080? Some want it, some want even more and many will be fine to use whatever they have using a resolution and graphics settings they feel good with.

And yes, there will be obviously also some who need to upgrade and everyone upgrades from time to time. Some will this year, some next or in two years...not everyone this year who doesn't already have a 2080.

Heck, what do you believe an Xbox Lockhart would do? A machine much weaker than Series X. Just running Xbox One games or what?

you cannot expect an old weak GPU below 2070/2080  to play on par with PS5/Xbox X graphic visual fidelity

If you read my PC thread about how 2080 will be a baseline you will see a hypocrite that don't want to upgrade, but latter  they will underestimate consoles.

Xbox Lockhart will be weaker  " if "  it's truly coming out, for now Not even Microsoft confirmed whether they will release it or not. Even if it's come out why would PC Master Race care about Lockhart ??? . PC Master Race need to aim better then top of the line consoles . :)

" But but but .... PC gamer don't want to upgrade to RTX 2080 and old GPU is enough to play next gen games !!!"

Wanting to upgrade and needing to upgrade are two totally different things.

You also seem to think that "PC gamers" are a synchronized hivemind, where every member wants the same. Some want to upgrade this or next year, some need to upgrade this or next year, but very few will need to upgrade next year to play new games on a decent level.

And please stop stressing your narrative of the "PC master race", these are strawman arguments.

  • "why would PC Master Race care about Lockhart ???"
  • "PC Master Race need to aim better then top of the line consoles"
  • "Only idiot buy PC to achieved console graphic. Want to go cheap buy consoles or never buy consoles."

Most PC gamers won't have a problem if the new consoles are a bit faster than their mid-range PCs (or aged high-end PCs) as long as the new games still run fine on it. They don't have to panickly invest in new hardware this year and probably also not next year.

Oh, your infamous PC thread where everything in the topic is wrong?

"Next Gen has arrived"... not yet, still 11 months to go

"PC gamers also need an upgrade."... we'll have to wait and see how fast the new consoles really are and which PC gamers really need an upgrade to play most 2020, 2021 and 2022 games.

"Xbox Series X specs will be the minimum requirement for next 7 years"... you still don't understand what minimum means. Also the bar will be lower if the PS5 has less performance than the Xbox Series X.

Well, maybe you shouldn't always talk about how people below a 2070 Super (or something similar) HAVE to upgrade when in reality you mean they have to upgrade to something similar as what next gen consoles will offer IF they want to experience the same quality.

But no idea how this would be even a point to talk about. It's not as if someone buys a Toyota and does wonder why it doesn't feel like his neighbor's Bentley. But that doesn't mean that even a Dacia would be enough for him since he can still drive on the same roads just with less horse power and a cheaper interior

And wtf is your PC Master Race point even about? That is only a very tiny fraction of PC gaming. And no, people who build a PC and don't buy only the best aren't stupid because they could buy a console instead. I explained that already to you in another thread.

There is no "if you want to be cheap the console is the only option". There are many many reasons why someone would prefer a PC with gaming abilities even if it wouldn't be a powerful one.

I don't think we've ever seen a new GPU generation that was 50% faster than it's predecessor, especially after only 2 years. Highly doubtful of this report.

I can see it. They nearly did it with Maxwell over Kepler (which was a 40+% jump). With better efficiency this go around, it's entirely possible.

True, but that's like saying Zen 3 can be a 40% uplift because it happened with Excavator to Zen. Kepler was about even with early GCN, and both weren't exactly setting the world on fire even compared to the power-hungry GPUs of the late Terascale and Fermi architectures. Low-hanging fruits and all of that, like back in the 90's, where every yeard had a very major clock + IPC uplift.

Of course, this could mean something like TOPS or gaming with RT, which then yeah, it's more feasible if we're talking about specific hardware features and loads. Lots of extra die space to play with with a die shrink.

50% more power for raytracing is about 50% less than I demand from ampere. C'mon Nvidia! You have a massive shrink on your hand, just give me double RT cores on the 3080ti.

The article says the 50% number is for RT performance, not overall. That is easily done by just adding more RT cores. The usual 20-30% in overall performance is much more likely. They really don't need to do more with no threat on the horizon whatsoever. As long as AMD continues to twiddle their thumbs we won't see a 50% performance increase ever.

Next Gen has arrived according to PC Master Race along time ago, i am just delivering what most PC race told me since 2013 when PS4 where announced.

Where if it's not an upgrade then you either building a new one or already has the newest one or perhaps, you want to wait to upgrade or maybe even you satisfied with low spec games.

That's true, If PS5 is lower maybe the PS5 will be the standard.
