Finished Games:

  • Nier: Automata (PS4) (9.5/10) One of the best stories I've ever experienced in video games with wonderfully written characters, combined with a huge amount of gameplay variety and a fun and fast-paced combat system, which had been the weak point in Yoko Taro's earlier works. Easily going to make my top 50 games of all time list this year.
  • GRIS (PC) (8/10) An absolutely gorgeous 2D platformer, easily one of the best looking games I've ever played, with a beautiful soundtrack layered on top of it all. The actual gameplay is quite simple, but solid, and there are some very satisfying moments of platforming in the game, even if none of it is all that challenging. It is a very short game, but every moment I spent with GRIS was thoroughly enjoyable.
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War (PS4) (8/10) A solid open world game made better by the nemesis system that did the same for Shadow of Mordor. The gameplay is fun, the world has a lot of nice variety to it, and although the story is kinda silly in the context of the books, but as a kind of non-canon side thing it's fine enough. Gets a bit grindy at the end, which soured me a little towards it, but it wasn't too bad. If the epilogue had been like in the original release before the balance changes and the removal of lootboxes I probably would have not been nearly as kind towards the game, but as it stands now I do recommend Shadow of War.

Currently Playing:

  • The Banner Saga 2 (PC)
  • The Witcher (PC)

Beaten:

1. Iconoclasts (Switch) - This game is kind of billed as a metroidvania, even though it only barely meets that requirement. Still, a great, mostly linear, action platformer with a killer story. We're talking RPG quality story. Almost straight out of a mid to late 90s JRPG, with its deeply political and religious overtones.

2. Phantasy Star (Switch) - Great old school JRPG.  I never had Sega systems growing up, so I never really got into these.  But I have the other 3 games on Steam, so I'll start working my way through the others soon.

In Progress:

1. Shenmue I (PC)

3. Shenmue I (PC) - Had a great time with this one. I know it's pretty archaic to you new schoolers, but it was a lot of fun.  Felt like this cheesy kung fu movie with terrible voice acting.  It was glorious. Looking forward to the second one.

In progress:

1. Blaster Master Zero 2 (Switch)

2. Either Blasphemous (PC) or Nioh (PC)

Beaten so far:

Shenmue 3
Pokemon Sword
Luigi's Mansion 3

Currently Playing:

Subnautica
Control
Death Stranding
Jamestown + (could probably put this in the beaten category but there is one extra mission I still didn't do)
Cities Skylines
TemTem (just got it yesterday)
CrossCode (really cool and extremely well-polished indie game I found on Steam, still in Early Access)

I play a lot of games, so I'm probably missing quite a few. Also, some of these were right around the new year and may have, in fact, happened last year. Also, some of my "currently playing" I may never play again, but I haven't yet consciously determined that I'm done with them. I also tried out a couple of the free EGS games like Farming Simulator 19, Braid, and a couple others which I can recall playing this year but not their names. Briefly checked out Path of Exile to see what new things are in the game since I last played (and since Tencent took over).

An update:

Beaten:

Kirby Star Allies: Second time playing through this game with my daughter, but this time we got everything in the main adventure mode.

Jamestown+: Playing a shmup with a 6 year old is more of an encumbrance than anything else, so after trying the final level dozens of times and only coming close once or twice, I decided to just play the level solo just to be done with it. Really enjoyed this one. :)

CodeVein Demo: lol, but I technically did finish the demo for this game. If it wasn't full price, I would think about picking it up, as the demo was a lot of fun.

Currently Playing:

Death Stranding: I played this a ton during the first couple weeks after release, but then I fell off the wagon and didn't get back to it for a month or so. Recently, however, I've found myself putting quite a lot of time into it, despite barely progressing the main quest at all since the new year.

What I like most about this game are the surprises along the way. Very high quality content, and putting the extra effort in to do side missions pays off well (oftentimes in the form of new items or equipment that you wouldn't have gotten otherwise). Given that I haven't exposed myself to very much information about this game, I have little knowledge of how far I am compared to how much is left (and I don't really want to know either). There are also several mechanics that I'm unsure about as well, but I imagine that at some point I will make sense of it.

TemTem: Made it to the second island.

Control: Haven't really played at all since, but I should really pick this back up again, as I was enjoying it immensely.

Same with CrossCode.
