Gonna interpret the large amounts of division on the internet surrounding this IP as a bad sign though. Not all is well in Disney Star Wars.

Yes and no.

Being serious for a moment...

There's no doubt that RoS was a sub-par ending to the trilogy. But the first two films did very well and were very well received. There's always been a very vocal Star Wars minority that don't like anything post RotJ, they've just gotten easier to hear/harder to avoid with the rise of the internet and Youtube.

But Star Wars isn't just its movies. Disney has also had three very well received original TV shows (not including all the Lego spin offs), made the extremely popular decision to bring back Clone Wars, and is planning two further live action TV shows. Thats before we get in to their successful and well-written series of books etc.

Certainly I hope that after a couple of years off they deliver a more consistent experience with some mainline films, but generally speaking Disney has done a good job with Star Wars.

Of course bringing back once-popular series like Clone Wars is a step in the right direction. Indeed, there is success but I imagine Disney will forever wonder to themselves what could have been if things were planned out and done better. A 1.1 billion dollar movie with mediocre merch sales could have been a 1.5 or 1.6 billion dollar movie with better merch sales.

Now I understand they're looking to slow SW films production down going forward. This seems like a retreat to me.

As for Last Jedi being well received... Not too sure about that...

Had a good laugh @bolded.  If your film is so well received and performs the way you wanted it to, you don't retcon it in the very next film in a vain attempt to bring back those fans you lost.  Disney's actions and the performance of ROS, and SW merch in general, proves that it was no small minority, like many of you wish to believe it was.

For TFA, sure.  TLJ?  Far from "epic." LOL.

Knives out? Who gives a shit about that movie anyways. I doubt that user will care since Rots made over a billion and 750M+ more than Knives out. All your comment does is make you look salty and trying to belittle a user and stir up shit. Pathetic post.

Exactly.  Don't really care about Knives Out, though I did hear it was a good film.  And I actually liked Looper.  Just keep him away from SW.

Really these people are just as salty as Rian Johnson himself was about legit criticism of his SW movie.  Their theories of an extremely small minority, who mainly hated on TLJ because they hate women and/or minorities, despite the constant examples of disliking the film for many other reasons, has been dashed to pieces.  They thought ROS was going to perform better than TLJ based on previous SW trilogies, because people were greatly anticipating the continuation of TLJ.

Some choose to remain silent.  Others choose to attack the messenger/s.  Still others choose to make up insane theories that if the film had released just 7 days earlier, it would have easily beat TLJ, meaning an extra $400M+ WW.

What were the expectations of both movies? What was the return on investment on them?

RoS buried a franchise KO started one, so I guess by those metrics KO did way better

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

ROS made $1.39M in its 9th weekend. This is 7.3% below RO's $1.5M for the same weekend. Currently, ROS sits at $512.9M at the DBO. This is 2.7% below RO's $527.2M for the same point in time. If this continues, ROS will end up with $517.8M vs RO's $532.2M.

There really hasn't been an update on its FBO for awhile. For right now, it stands at $548.5M, 4.7% above RO's final of $523.9M. This would be a WW total of $1.07B, 0.9% above RO's $1.06B.

Well, this is Weekend 10. This will be the last update until the final numbers are in.

ROS made $565.7K in its 10th weekend. This is 28.5% lower than RO's, $791.3K for the same weekend. Currently, ROS sits at $514.1M at the DBO. This is 2.7% lower than RO's $528.6M for the same point in time. If this continues, ROS will end up with $517.8M vs RO's $532.2M.

Currently, the FBO makes up 51.9% of the WW BO. If this continues, ROS will end up with a FBO take of $562.2M, 7.3% higher than RO's $523.9M. A WW take of $1.08B, 1.9% higher than RO's $1.06B.

The movie's complete dogshit, so it's not surprising that it's had an underwhelming box office performance. It's easily the worst Star Wars movie, and one of the worst movies I have ever paid to see.

Yes, it's worse than Ep. 1 and 2, and it's far worse than TLJ as a movie. TLJ, at the very least, took a few risks and tried something new.
