I think we have another TLJ on our hands, going by the plot leaks, which have been confirmed. Only this time they aren't exactly pushing an agenda that agenda driven critics can get behind. In fact, them trying to desperately get back the fans they shit on just two years ago may have pissed those critics off.  Now, we just have a mediocre, maybe even bad, film that critics can't ignore is convoluted and poses more questions than answers old ones. Something Jar Jar Abrams is known for.

You claimed you don't want politics in your entertainment. Yet you go out of your way to bring it into the entertainment section, every single chance you get.

If you want to suggest that a movie failed because of some supposed politics not explicitly stated by the film, then make a thread about it in Politics Discussion.
Staff is tired of cleaning up political mudslinging you consistently start outside of that section.

This is a discussion about the ratings of the SW franchise, not an actual film.  And what sticks out like a sore thumb is the critical reception of TLJ.  What I said is not some off topic mudslinging, like you claim.  It really wasn't even that specific or a long rant.  I find it strange you even felt the need to point it out.  But, it does compel me to speak my peace.

TLJ did explicitly state its politics within the film.  And the director and crew stated them in the real world when they bashed fans who didn't like the film as misogynistic manbabies.  If you wish to ignore that, that's fine by me.  However, there's someone who didn't, Disney.  They did a complete 180, trying to get those fans back, basically throwing TLJ under bus.  Unfortunately, they gave the film to JJ "mystery box" Abrams, so now the film is convoluted and brings up even more questions.

And there.  I won't take this "mudslinging" further, nor will I make some specific thread when others are allowed to spout what they wish to say in here or refer to people as fake fans.

Yeah, I read a plot leak on reddit a week or so ago, parts of which were later backed up by the Swedish movie rating agency in their description of the movie, seemingly making that leak legit. That leak was so incredibly convoluted, it was baffling. If that leak was legit, I don't think that I'll like the movie very much, it didn't sound as bad as Episode 8, but still not anything like what I wanted out of episode 9 to redeem the trilogy after episode 8, let alone anything like how I wanted this trilogy to end after episode 7, before Ruin got his hands on it.

I just can't believe JJ actually thinks he can continue to get away with creating a bunch of questions without answering them.  From what I heard, there is no real explanation as to why Palpatine survived or to explain the retcon to Rey's past.

I agree with your post from the beginning to the end.

But I watched a video reaction from a fan who got good taste in my opinion, and it was very negative. So don't ask too much from the movie.

Yeah I’ll be going in with an open mind.. If it’s bad it’s bad, if it’s great then that’s good. Either way is fine, it’s not like I’m going to just not see it.

I felt like watching Rogue One today. That one’s still awesome.

Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie outside of the original trilogy.

Wait when did this happen?

After hearing that JJ basically tried to undo TLJ, and after seeing the critics disliking this one after they loved TLJ so much, I´m actually a little bit curious about it now. But I won´t give in. I´m watching that s*t online. Besides, I didn´t even like TFA either so is not like I have much faith in JJ.

You have an interesting definition of very bad if you think 85 constitutes that

I think you'll like it, there's a lot less virtue-signalling in this one

You are strawmaning in hopes of avoiding my question and acknowledging the false equivalence you just made. I never said my view was consistent with critic consensus like you did, and there was no virtue-signaling in the movies themselves.

Back to the question, who's not looking at the movie critically, you or the critics? You don't need to answer though, the conclusion is obvious. You side with critics and speak as if they're an authority as long as they share your overall opinion, regardless of whether or not their reviews are fair n objective. Now in a desperate attempt to remain consistent, you're deluding yourself into thinking the critics still share your opinion. Yikes.

Edit: deleted

What I have said is that I like this movie. What I said about The Last Jedi in the unrelated thread I you linked too that I have now reviewed is that most critics and film-goers liked the film, which is self-evident. From what I can see, I didn't express any personal opinion on TLJ in that thread.

So, given I have offered an opinion on just one movie, and a single opinion is inherently consistent sooooo...I must be desperate

For the record though, I liked this movie more than The Last Jedi. Which is my personal opinion - I don't recall saying I was looking at the movie critically or that I am a professional film critic. Perhaps you were responding to someone else with that portion of your post.

I saw it last night. Had its flaws, but overall was very good. The first 10 minutes is waaaaaaayyy too fast but it settles in to a good pace after that.

Well, I'm still stoked to go see it on saturday. Don't really care for the critics as I enjoyed the prequels (even if Attack of the Clones IMHO the worst Star Wars movie of all the movies out now that I've seen, which is all save for Rise of Skywalker, and I still enjoyed Attack of the Clones), and I honestly enjoyed The Last Jedi (even if the slow progression of the plot might have hampered this movie).

Certain Star Wars "fans" in 2017: "The critics are stupid and probably SJWs. The Last Jedi is obviously franchise-destroying garbage. Rian Johnson is a hack and Kathleen Kennedy is the devil. Yadda yadda."

Same Star Wars "fans" in 2019: "LOL. Mediocre score from critics. Yet another Nu-Wars fail. I guess the Disney checks didn't clear this time, amirite? Yadda yadda."

When it comes to certain "fans," critic scores are to be either dismissed out of hand or taken as gospel, depending on how it fits their narrative. Me? I realize that critics tend to review films not as fans but as, well, critics. They'll knock points off a film if they don't like the writing, cinematography, acting, and/or other elements of a film. Few of them judge a film first and foremost by its entertainment value. Lots of people still enjoy Episodes I & II despite similar review scores to Episode IX (this seems to be increasingly the case for people who dislike Disney-era Star Wars, even if they talked shit about the prequels back when they were new). This seems to be a movie "for the fans, not necessarily the critics." Indeed, there are tons of movies enjoyed unironically by millions of people despite middling reviews from critics. They may not be Oscar-caliber cinema, but what they are is entertaining. I feel this shall be the case with Rise of Skywalker. I have a ticket for tomorrow night, and I'm going again Saturday with some friends. There hasn't been a single Disney-era Star Wars film I haven't liked so far, and I doubt that will change after tomorrow night.

P.S.: If you're someone who I've already had a back-and-forth with in other threads about this subject as it pertains to Star Wars, I said my peace to you in those threads. I have nothing more to say to you. You know where I stand.

How'd you guys feel at this scene?

I wasn't a fan...you realise thats from a different movie right?

"I wasn't a fan..."

>Me neither...

"you realise thats from a different movie right?"

>It's from one of the newer star wars...

I thought The Force Awakens was boring and bad and The Last Jedi was just awful. Maybe this asynchronous enjoyment will continue with Rise of Skywalker and I will not have wasted my trip to the cinema--unless it really is that bad that finally people like me can be united with the critics. Trainwreck or pleasant surprise, I imagine it will be one of those extremes and nothing in between.

*My signature from 2011 which I'm too lazy to change*

Currently awaiting the arrivals of:
Kid Icarus Uprising
Resident Evil: Revelations
Tekken 3D: Prime Edition
Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D
Beyond the Labyrinth
Heroes of Ruin
Luigi's Mansion 2

Eh, some those scored too high.

My expectations are low given 7 and 8.
