To loosley quote John Carmack in the 90-ies:
”Games are like a porno, you expect them to have a story but it’s not why you are there”

If games focus on game play the clichés don’t matter. You start noticing the clichés when the game play is shallow.

Take BotW for example, it has the cliché lf clichés but a lot of people (me included) spent a lot of time playing that game because the game play is superb.

If games focus on game play then there is a much higher chance that I get bored and go play something else.

That's why quotes that pretend everyone is the same are outdated.

Oh, and another one I can't stand; "the final battle is at hand! But first, go do 4 hours of tedious padding." I hate it when this grinds a game's pacing to a halt just when it feels like you're building up to the climax, and it seems to happen in a frustratingly large proportion of big games.

It's like when you're wanking and feel an orgasm coming on, then doorbell rings and it's some annoying door-to-door salesman or the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Escort Mission.

Move list mandatorily replaced with new (supposedly cool and awesome, but crappy) powers, then throw the player into the (final) boss. (God of War, DMC 3)

Permanently missable items. Final Fantasy games, Xenoblade, and most JRPGs have a crapton of them. (Paper Mario TTYD, Arc Rise Fantasia and Atelier games have a surprisingly low amount of them).

Not explaining how shit works. Even better if the game has an unskippable tutorial about how to walk.

Can't win without luck. (Battle against the Black Knight in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance).

As an avid RPG player I must say that “the chosen one” narrative is my most hated. Although many of my favorite games have this (Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dragon’s Dogma, etc.) I really don’t like it. I love it when I have a character (love it even more when I can create a character) who’s just there to help and ends up being the hero. Also, extra point for a choice between good & evil. Always a good playthrough as human male. Then evil playthrough as random race female.

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

I don't mind it though I agree that it's refreshing when you just happen to become the hero instead of following fate/destiny/whatever. The original Fallout nailed this since you just happen to be the one guy the leader of the vault sends outside. Ironically enough, they changed this with Fallout 2 where your character is literally called "Chosen One" lol.

Well I guess the first game you’re also “the chosen one” seeing as how you were chosen to go outside lol.

In regards to #3 on the OP, Bioshock does an amazing job using that one. *spoilers* When you're instructed to start putting on Big Daddy armor it is very obviously not a good idea, and Atlas points out how obviously insane you'd have to be to do it. But at the same time, what options do you have aside from putting down the controller?

Haha, good point!
