Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo's success with the Switch both a blessing and a curse?

The specs and release timing are a concern, don't get me wrong. But here is the curse: Nintendo's arrogance. The Wii U failed big time because Nintendo assumed the Wii name and the tablet alone were enough to sells tens of millions, if not a hundred million units. I think hybrid systems are the way to go for Nintendo in the future. I imagine they'll use the Switch name again for its successor. Call It Switch 2, Switch Evolved, whatever. Now imagine they don't promote the console properly, and the price is too high. Not to mention trickling out exclusives people want to play, rather than at a good pace. It would be the Wii U situation all over again. The only time Nintendo has had two home consoles in a row that crushed the competition were the NES and SNES. The Wii was a fluke in otherwise declining console sales, and the Switch is another fluke (in part due to it being a hybrid). Nintendo has a very turbulent history in hardware success.
I'm hoping that the Switch 2 has almost none of the issues Switch has had. I want something better than the Switch already is, not worse.

One of the (partially) gaming-based bloggers/writers I enjoy reading is Sean Malstrom, who's delved extensively into this idea of Nintendo being its own worst enemy mainly through its own arrogance. It seems like every time they fail or fall short, it's by getting complacent in their position and developing games they seemingly want to (which are usually more obscure, less appealing software) rather than what fans/a mass-market audience would be drawn to. We saw it with the N64/GameCube, and again with the Wii U.

They're very-much capable of creating huge hits when they feel like they need to (Wii series, NSMB, etc) but ironically they only seem to do this when coming off a major dip in their sales/marketshare to reestablish dominance.

I honestly wonder why we're still getting this kind of rethoric even after almost 3 years in the Switch cycle .... If you understand the Switch inherent reasons for it's success, then you should probably understand why the upcoming next gen isn't a factor on how it'll perform.

Yeah. What will definitely decline is third party support, at least when it comes to ports of big PS4/ONE games, which is a shame.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

I remember in the Wii era all the AAA games that were supposed to kill the Wii. People always find some way to doom Nintendo. Only Doom I see for Nintendo Switch in 2020 is Doom Eternal.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

It will be fine, it's a decently powerful handheld masquerading as hybrid and not really competing with home consoles (otherwise, everything competes with home consoles).

Had the Switch been a Home console it would have failed. The Switch is my favorite system because of its portability and most of the market sees it as such. Nintendo left the home console bussiness.

Except for those of us that play it only as a home console ... I've used it as a portable once while waiting in line on a black friday.  It was too cold to have my hands out of my pockets so even then all I did was watch Hulu on it.

Well, there's a reason why Nintendo released the Switch lite. I mean when you think of it, the Switch is basically a more refined and sexier looking Wii-U where they switched things around. The Wii-U is a home console that can also be used for limited handheld gaming. And the Switch is designed as a handheld first and can also be used as a (limited) home console.

It's like I said in the @d21lewis console wars thread, with each passing month of Switch sales PS fans will get more nervous about the PS5's chances to win the generation. If the PS5 can't win in sales, the next best option is to categorize Switch as a handheld because that way the PS5 can't really lose to Switch.

Unfortunately, facts don't support the theory that Nintendo has left the home console market. The tie ratio of Switch is developing like it would for a home console, so it's evident how the console is being used by the majority of owners.

I agree. You did say that.

It's funny how some users in forums get "concerned" that everything new that comes out will make people move away from Nintendo. Like if some fancy cinematic trailer of a game that everybody played before travesty with a new IP and better graphics will make everyone instantly quit buying their Switch or throw to the trash if they already own one, when in reality most of the gaming audience prefer Nintendo games over the AAA products. Folks, that's numbers telling.

We reap what we sow

A 5 watt APU based on 2014's mobile tech is not a home console. It really shouldn't even be an argument. Add a dock to the Vita and you had the same thing. Personally the Wii U was a great console for me. If I look at the Switch, outside Mario Odyssey, nothing was new on the system for the first few years. The Gamecube to Wii transition was more exciting than the Wii U to Switch transition (20 years with only 2 power levels, only Nintendo). Would like modern mobile tech or a console based on the weakest current GPU, the 1650 Super. That's all. If Nintendo can't even do that, I'll be supporting emulators with my money, not buying another Switch (which I already sold after beating Mario Odyssey). If Nintendo wants to nip the emulator community in the bud, they can start with a decent home console. Nintendo is losing 10+ million of their life long fans with the Switch, and you can't ignore that the Switch's success is mainly the people who bought the 3DS. I have several friends with a Wii U who have bought the Switch and are less than impressed.

Switch was designed as a hybrid otherwise it wouldn't have a scaling feature for docked and undocked the is no limited home console.

What are you on about? This is false on all levels, Xenoblade 2, Arms, Octopath, BOTW, Splatoon 2, Mario and Rabbids, Fire Emblem Warriors, Hollow Knight etc.. were all out in the first few years.

Here's news for you the APU in the PS4 and X1 were also tech used in mobiles as well does that mean they're not home consoles either?
