Well, what a pleasant surprise that Disco Elysium got few awards, it's really very unique experience, narrative RPG born out of many years that devs spent playing pen&paper RPG set in that world.

I don't really remember hearing about it. Might have to check it out.

It pretty much went fairly under the radar, being indie game, in addition to being heavily narrative based RPG with practically no combat, which is not eveyone's cup of tea. To be honest, it's not mine either, whether we're talking about tabletop or videogame RPGs, since I prefer them with all 3 pillars (exploration, social interaction and combat) being balanced, but Disco Elysium just oozes with atmosphere, in addition to having great writing and attributes/skills system, so I really enjoyed it a lot.

At least the nicknames for the Xbox Series X (SeXbox, Xbox SeX) are less demoralizing than the Xbone or the XBone SAD for the XB1.

Can we all stop a moment to discuss how hilariously stupid the design for the new Xbox is? It's got a worse name than the Xbox One (which was the third Xbox), and it's a damn internet router, not a game console. What the Eff is this shit?

I don't think it's bad at all. The name is terrible but considering you can place it horizontally I have no problem with the design at all.

I love the design personally, the name is definitely suspect though. Oh well

Sekiro wining GOTY feels like they went with the safe choice. Death Stranding is a very divisive game and RE2 is a remake. So I feel Sekiro is the right choice.
But the year itself was rather slow for games - IMO. I think DMC5 or FE should've been nominated over Control and Outer Worlds.

I think its hideous. But I also thought the PS3 had an ugly design and ended up getting used to it, so, you know. Whatever.

Nope, the winner could not be more spot on. Sekiro is the mix of From's own ideas aaaand… some normal gameplay.

Smash is the biggest success of the year critically and commercially. It's a massive hit with casuals, fans, and competitive audiences alike. It's an extremely ambitious and polished game that brings together dozens of different game universes together, with loads of different franchises, different developers, different companies, all being represented in a massive game with over 70 characters, 100 stages, and 1000 songs - and counting. It's a huge celebration of gaming unlike anything else that's ever happened in the industry.

I don't know how deserving Sekiro is, because I haven't played it and neither am I interested, but Smash was definitely the best pick here.

Agree, and Fire Emblem not being included in the category was BS.  I haven't played the game but I can just tell from reviews/game play that it is a "good game".  Games like Sekiro, Death Stranding, etc are just the same formula over and over.  I just don't understand the appeal of playing the same game every year.

Now, there's no need to bash on games for no good reason. I don't know if Death Stranding is a good game or not, but from what I've seen it is definitely not formulaic, it's unlike anything else out there, for better or worse. Sekiro I suppose is more formulaic, if we can consider the Souls stuff a formula, but it was still a notable game in its own right.

The ones that definitely didn't deserve to be there were Control and Outer Worlds, I hadn't even heard of either of them prior to their nomination. Everyone speaks so highly of Fire Emblem, I guess it could be mentioned in for one of those, and personally I think Astral Chain should've gotten the nod too - it losing out to DMC V on the action game category possibly indicating that DMC itself was robbed of a spot too, everyone loves that game. I actually have no idea what Outer Worlds and Control were doing in there, to be frank. And by the way, I'm a From Software hater. It's all about knowing when to put your bias aside, and I wholeheartedly believe Smash should have been game of the year, no bias.

Wasn't bashing? Just said they are formulaic and don't really bring anything new to the gaming industry.  If you include those games then they should include games like CoD, lol.  Smash is formulaic to a certain extent but the developers of that game seem to push the boundaries of what is possible with that formula.  Same with games like Fire Emblem and Luigi's Mansion.  I just personally don't get excited for PS/Xbox games anymore.  It's a yearly basis of copycat Action/Action-Adventure/Shooter/Sports games from those consoles.  And I still can't believe the way the categories that Nintendo won were handled.

The thing is, you're wrong. Death Stranding was not formulaic at all, it brought plenty of new to the gaming industry. It's nothing like CoD, and definitely far more innovative than Smash Ultimate, Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem, or Sekiro for that matter.

Elsewhere, I don't mind. From then on it's your opinion.

Brought what new exactly in your eyes?

SSBU'c MC is 93 and Sekiro is 91 on Xbox One so the difference is abysmal. Also there are other games with 93 Meta like RE2.

Sure, SSBU sells shitalot, but Sekiro also is the biggest hit in business terms for From Software.

SSBU is hell-packed with  the content, but the main problem here  is - unlike BOTW for example - it's basically just another Smash game.  Sekiro's impact is bigger.

And what exactly in this well thought argument makes me wrong in saying Sekiro is just another From Software game?

Because Sekiro is like a re-inventing of the Soulslikes. It brought quite a big changes for the formula. Anyone who has played DS/BB and Sekiro will detect the differences immedatiely.

So,no. Im far from being a Soulslike diehards but the reality is that - like many others have pointed before - Sekiro was simply a safe pick this year.
