Forums - Gaming Discussion - MLB The Show goes multiplatform

Train wreck said:

The only companies making officially licensed baseball games for the past 6 years are the MLB themselves and Sony. Its pretty obvious that MLB's efforts in making a quality baseball game was not happening and I'm sure sales of the game on multiple platforms were a fraction of what Sony was getting with The Show just on Playstation. The MLB is currently going through their winter meetings (held in San Diego) and this is the agreement that both parties came up with going forward (a negotiated deal that benefits both parties). The 2021 date is important as MLB is still slated to release their R.B.I 2020 for all platforms (PS4, Xbox, and Switch) while The Show 20 was announced weeks ago for March 2020.

If they can make RBI with their license for all platforms but asked MBL the Show to go to all platforms then it is indicative that they know no other company would make a better game than San Diego, so they rather have it that way instead of giving license for another company even if allowing San Diego to keep releasing only on PS.

I doubt they'll do any timed exclusivity deals given that sports games are seasonal.  They need to coincide with the sport itself to maximize sales potential.

Sony's MLB games launch in March, which is the beginning of the baseball season.  It ends 7 months later, in October.  It would still be inside the season if they did hold of on the other consoles.  Not saying they will, but that would be a smart move if they want to push their own console sales.  Selling to the other consoles would be icing on the cake.  Seriously, what other MLB game our they going to play?  The answer is none.

If the goal is to increase software sales, which is a motivation of going multiplat, that's about the fucking worse idea ever.

Maybe Sony can pay themselves for timed exclusivity?

Instead, maybe Sony should pay themselves to get DLC, missions and armor earlier than other platforms.

OR MAYBE, they should just release the game as a multiplat and be happy with all the extra money they make from that. Sounds crazy, but I think it could work.

There is absolutely no way to decrease SW sales, save make a shitty product.  As I mentioned above, Sony's is the only MLB game on the market.  If Nintendo or MS fans want a MLB game, they'll have to get Sony's.  Doing timed exclusivity for a few months would definitely help push their own console sales and probably wouldn't hurt the mutiplat sales much.  Of course, like I also mentioned above, not saying they will go down that path.  Just a possibility.

The way that could happen (don't think it will) is like they launch the game on January on PS5 and March for the other systems, similar to how EA Access get early access.

Great news for those that choose to use non PlayStation devices.

I really hope that they will also expand the series to VR and make it available on PSVR, Vive, Rift, and Index. The pitcher batter showdown is prime material for VR. Home Run Derby VR is a nice arcade experience, but we really need a full sim VR experience.

MLB, NBA and Fifa would be good modes on VR to live like the player.

I doubt we'll see many PS5 titles going multi-platform. It seems MLB gave Sony a lot of incentive to make MLB: The Show a multi-platform game.

That's because MLB owns the license.  You can't make an MLB game without the license.

This was understood by both your comment and my reply.

It doesnt answer my question though. No one else is making or even trying to make an MLB game. Having a high quality game, even exclusive, is better than no game at all.

Hence, why would they play hard ball in this scenario? Basically, I question whether this move by Sony is because they were forced to. But maybe it is as simple as MLB deciding to remove the licence. Seema like quite the gamble imho.

During negotiations Both parties most likely looked at stagnating sales and with the PS5 around the corner and a changing gaming world, with crossplay streaming etc, decided it would be in their best interests to expand onto other platforms and this outcome was the  best and easiest way for this to be done, and since this seems a sensible enough idea,I don't think any coercion was needed from the MLB if they were pushing it,for all we know Sony themselves might have mooted the idea.

I dont know. I dont think stagnating sales of the series factored into this.

Mlb2019 had the best debut for the IP, and a baseball game, ever in the USA. It also stayed in the top 10 for longer than at least Mlb2018.

If anything, MLB The Show has actually been seeing growth. Now, of course, that growth should accerlerate in 2021.

But yes, I dont think there was any coercion from MLB, and I think it was just an incentivised decision for both parties to make.

I stand corrected, still we agree that there is enough carrot for both sides, so no need to pull out the stick.

That's fantastic, I predicted this would happen years ago but not under Sony. I thought EA or 2K would take over.

My logic was this is a strong series but doesent sell well enough. Its one of the the lower selling annual sports games.

Should be good sales given Xbox is popular in the US and this series only sells well in the US.

It only releases in the U.S. and Australia. Which baffles me because baseball is the most popular sport in Japan. They have their own professional league that does extremely well. I'm not sure how popular Major League Baseball is over there, but I'd think The Show could sell respectably well if they released there.

Well they did technically release The Show in Japan, although it is just a lazy release. By that I mean it is just the English version of the game and they didn’t translate anything into Japanese.

No, I'm saying the goal is the increase sales, that's why its going multiplat. Your suggestion of timed exclusivity may hurt sales.

Not sure if The Show is a system seller, certainly not nearly as significant as other Playstation exclusives. Also the game's release coincides with the season. It sounds like you agree that timed exclusivity may deter some sales.

I know it won't happen, but can you imagine a Zelda game using the PS5 to its fullest?
