Subsidizing is only truly effective when you do it early gen. It takes alot of extra accessory, subscription, and software sales to recoup what you lose when you subsidize a console. Phil was not head of Xbox early this gen when XB1 released, Don Mattrick was. Mattrick made the decision not to subsidize XB1 on launch, not Phil. By the time Phil was head and XB1 X was getting ready to release, it was too late for subsidizing it to have any significant effect, all it would have done is lose them money on hardware sales in exchange for a small increase in userbase. Phil decided that this gen was basically already a lost cause, and that it would be better to focus on profitability over userbase size for the remainder of the generation.

This does not however mean that Phil will do the same thing with Scarlett that he did with X. A new gen is a chance for a fresh start for Xbox, and since subsidizing is most effective when done at the beginning of a gen, he may very will choose to take the fight to Sony by subsidizing a more powerful system to aim for price parity with PS5.

Now do I think that we will see a 50% more powerful console? Not a chance. Maybe 20% more powerful for the same price as PS5 would be my expectation if that is Phil's plan.

Phil took over in 2014.  At that point, he could have convinced MS to subsidize the XBO to $299.  The X also released in 2017.  That was all his baby.  He definitely could have had MS subsidize it.  The problem?  MS, not Phil Spencer, makes that call.  And they are not in the game of subsidizing their HW significantly.  They have made that obvious.  Hell, after the XBO's lackluster results, there was talk of spinning off that division to let it suffer its own fate.  Even Bill Gates said he would be fine with that.  That should show you they are not in the game to take losses on HW.

They are fine with buying new studios and taking a hit on Gears 5 in order to push GamePass and xCloud, because that is where they see their future.  Not subsidizing HW in order to sell more than Sony.  In the end, Xbox HW is not a big concern for MS.  On the other hand, PS HW is very important to Sony.  And considering Sony has already said they want to have consumers move over as quickly as possible to the PS5, expect them to bring their A game on power, games, and price.

Phil didn't have the power to decide much financially until his promotion in 2017 I guess. That's the important date which gave him much more power about how to use which amount of money.

Wishful thinking. MS has shown that their future lies in streaming. They want a powerful console, but they aren't going to go all to beat Sony by any significant margin. At best, they will be within 10%-15% of each other, with a chance Sony is on top. 40%-50% is something to tout. 10%-15% won't make enough of a difference to the eye. Especially not when Sony's 1st party studios are HW magicians, getting every last drop of power out of their consoles.

More importantly, I doubt MS is going to want to subsidize the Scarlett like Sony will the PS5. The XBO pricing already proves this. They could have launched at $399, w/ Kinect if they wanted to subsidize the HW and take on the PS4. Instead they launched at $499. Same goes for the X. They could have subsidized it and launched at $399, to take on the Pro. Instead, $499, again. We may even see the same $399 vs $499, again, next gen.

It's just the secret sauce all over, again.

Wow you act like only Sony have devs that can achieve such mile stones. That or you choose to ignore that the world is a big place, a very big place.

To play devils advocate, Microsoft has more studios than Sony now... And a massive portion of which we haven't seen make an exclusive that really pushes the Xbox's hardware.

Actually, at last count, they were about even (around 15 each). This is particularly better for Sony [currently], given their 1st Party studios put out more hardware pushing content.

Of course, I expect things to even back out some at the beginning of next gen, but I just wanted to clear up that little misconception. :P

Same number of studios sure, same number of teams maybe not.

one set of studios puts out Spider Man, Horizon, Bloodborne, Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, etc. The other is putting out sea of thieves, crackdown 3, state of decay, Halo, Gears, etc.

It's not a numbers game, it's the quality difference between the studios.

Having said that, can't wait for wasteland 3 :)

Quality is a debatable topic, The games you picked above is more a preference thing. All those games are completely different to each other so apples to oranges. But if you want to compare quality than its best you put simular games togother. Better comparing same genre games like Halo 5 up with games like Killzone SF or Grand Turismo Sport up against Forza Motorsport 7 etc.

MS claimed most of there studios have 2 teams working on games, eg Rare is making Everwild while the other team focuses on Sea of Thieves etc.

So far everything indicates that both consoles will be over 10 Teraflops, with PS5 having a slight edge. If I would take a guess I think Xbox Scarlett will be 10,01 TF just because Microsoft probably assumed Sony was going for 7-8TF and they wanted the marketing number above 10. PS5 should be between 10,1-10,6TF.

Next-gen PS5 will go against Xbox Scarlett, Google stadia, Amazon cloud gaming, Xcloud and PC gaming but I expect PS5 will slaughter everything.

6x master league achiever in starcraft2

Beaten Sigrun on God of war mode

Beaten DOOM ultra-nightmare with NO endless ammo-rune, 2x super shotgun and no decoys on ps4 pro.

1-0 against Grubby in Wc3 frozen throne ladder!!

Maybe MS will have a more powerful system than PS5 but does it really matter? Intellivision was more powerful than Atari 2600. Master System more powerful than NES. SNES did beat Genesis and SNES overall was the beefier system so there is a win. PS1 is less powerful than N64. PS2 was less powerful than Xbox and Gamecube. Wii was less powerful than PS360. PS4 is a bit more muddled. Base PS4 is better than base Xbox One but Pro is weaker than X. Maybe PS5 will best Scarlett.

Power more often then doesn't really matter. PS4 having much more Japanese support, I just don't see how Xbox can topple PS unless Sony pulls out an XBO reveal blunder or PS3. The last thing I am concerned about next-gen is power levels. I care about my physical games. The kind of games we get that I want to buy. How tolerable are the DLC practices or can I play it offline. I'm more worried about how devs will screw things up.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

OK man, but coming to devkit thread and saying you don't care about hardware is like coming to videogame site and saying you prefer hopscotch.
Maybe a lost cause, but what do "i totally don't care, except i care enough to tell you i don't care" statements do for ANYBODY? I'm really with you in the bigger picture re: DLC and controls on customer, but that doesn't justify hijacking hardware thread.

Well, yeah, it's a debatable topic, which is why we are debating it...

I did mention halo on my examples above and it's patently obvious the quality difference in quality output from both lines of first party studios to the general public. If you'd want to put games side by side for some reason, i think it would look more embarrassing for Microsoft if you put their 3rd person action games vs the ones on Sony side.

We have some admission by the Xbox guys themselves in the justification for their studio purchasing spree, they were caught with their pants down all generation and hopefully they can improve. Which goes back to my original point, it's not about quantity, these studios need now to produce the type of quality content Sony WWS have done this gen.. Hope they can, more good games for us all to enjoy.

We re less than a year away.... and hardly anyone has a xbox scarlet dev kit?
And its hardware isnt finalise yet?

To surprise sony? I dont buy it.
Also some people must have ones, since they can all agree the PS5 dev kit is currently faster.
