The Touryst - The good, the bad, the ugly

Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Touryst - The good, the bad, the ugly

Some people might be interested to learn how good the latest game from Shin'en is. The Touryst released on this week's Thursday, but there isn't much about the game out there yet.

The Touryst in a nutshell is a game about a nameless protagonist on vacation who tries to solve the mystery of ancient ruins that are located on a variety of small islands. The activities focus on puzzle-solving, platforming and fetch quests with a variety of minigames sprinkled in.

The good

The general pace and flow of the game are motivating
Great artstyle and technical execution
Minigames are fun or at least interesting

The bad

Islands are small and should have contained more secrets and activities
Mandatory change of clothes can only be done on one specific island
Physics don't work properly or player-friendly at all times

The ugly

Two sections are very frustrating; one because of the physics, another one due to lack of shadows when platforming
The game is very short, took me about five hours for 100%
Tease of just the beginning, followed by a cliffhanger

Verdict

What could have been a good to great game ends too soon and on a sour note. It's bad form to talk about a main quest just being the beginning and after its completion have the characters talk about the second game. The price should have been half of what it actually is in order for a recommendation. But as it is, it's a clear don't buy this and instead wait for a significant discount. The Touryst is one of those games where most things are at a level where they should be, but the price/value ratio is a complete failure. It isn't a bad game, it's just that it's severely overpriced.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

Thanks for the review/overview. I was literally about to buy it. I'll hold off.

Just an old man, a family man, and a gamer. My family is more important to me then life itself.

I've added the game's info to the DB. You can add this as an user review if you want to, Rol.

So in conclusion its expensive?
I dont see how that is different from any nintendo made game

Its probably a seal of quality worth

The tease of a continuation of the story is disappointing to hear. I plan to try it once there is a sale.

Probably planning to continue the game with dlc.

I like Shin'en but not everything they do. I'm glad they tried to make somethign truly new for them. Now I hope they make another twin stick shooter.

I'm a big fan of Shinen and have bought all their games on the systems I've owned since... far out, since Jet Rocket on the Wii in 2010.

This one just isn't grabbing my interest though, I really don't like the blocky art style, it feels generic and unimpressive. It's a shame, I was really hyped to see what their first game built for Switch would look like, was hoping for something with a visual style more along the lines of FAST RMX.

Meh. I wouldn't say that a 20 bucks feel expensive honestly.
But I've never used the price/playtime ratio since it devalues games that are actually great despite their shortness.

I've been searching my way through some puzzles so far but can't say I had difficulties with the platforming.

I really hope this retro/voxel style isn't the start of a new trend for Shinen. I want to see their next game push the graphical limits of Switch the way Fast Racing Neo did for Wii U and Jett Rocket did for Wii.

I have the game, it looks beautiful, and fits well with the type of game it is, I also feel I would love to see an open world game with these visuals some day
