Forums - Gaming Discussion - Half-Life: Alyx launches March 2020

I'll remain cautiously optimistic as that trailer has bull shot written all over it. I also wonder how it will work when they are going to support all movement schemes, room scale, standing, sitting, teleportation, shift, continuous with analog stick (no info for rotation) while also supporting both finger tracking and trigger based.

Doom has shown how badly that can end up. By not committing to any one control scheme, compromises will have to be made. So cautiously optimistic.

Game looks fantastic. I really hope there is mode to play the game without VR but i am daubting it.

It VR only, the creators basically said they did not see a way to map controls for all the stuff you can do in game to a keyboard or mouse.

VR is indeed the future, Joke aside. This games look fantastic. Valve should make this games exclusives for their VR device . I hope i can secure one Valve index next year or another 2 years, i need to saving money from now on.

I think VR is the future.  And Valve is putting their back into it.

Exclusive for their own device would go against what they've been developing for a long time.  They're really pushing VR not as their own single device, but more like a diverse and open platform like PC is.

I am hoping to get an Index in 2 years myself.  But maybe at that point I'll have to wait for what comes after..

Yeah i want VR as Industries front rather then Cloud or mobile.  WHy i insist Valve use this opportunity to push their device by making it exclusives because on how bad Oculus is especially in securing VR exclusives.  I want they to be a head of Epic and Oculus

Unfortunately not.

Valve is really pushing for VR to be the future.

As much as I am not a fan of motion controls, I will say that if any game that can make VR work its Half Life. I can imagine being on the tram in the first game looking out the windows in VR and the 2nd game has that roller coaster action playstyle that can suit being in VR as well.

This game looks increidble and they are sticking close to that Half Life style. Each half Life Main game has a massive reputation in bringing in something new and ALYX seems to be doing the same.

I will be shopping around for a Vive unit now.

Looks amazing but I wonder if this is on rails. Also, why does Valve have to alienate 99% of their fanbase by making it a Vive exclusive and where the hell is Half-Life 3?! I say, we riot at dawn!

It's not a rail shooter. It supports Locomotion, so you can freely move around like in other VR games.

They experimented with different concepts for VR and looked for a way to put it into a game. One choice was Portal, but that didn't really fit with all the jumping around since people will get motion sick really fast.

So their next option was Half Life and that's what it is now.

It's not a Vive exclusive. It runs on several devices that support SteamVR and are connected to PC like Occulus Rift, Valve Index HTC Vive, Pimaxx and so on.

Half Life 3 is in Limbo. Ask Gabe.

Good luck with your riot.

I'll wait for reviews instead of putting blind faith into a developer who hasn't produced anything significant in years... I've played enough VR to say that what was shown in that trailer will never be as good in actual game. However walking around in the half life universe does already make it worth putting up with motion controls.

Decision for me is do I pay 52 for the game or 260 for the index controllers that comes with game. you dont need index controllers but they said there will be none essential things like crushing cans with you hand that will require index controllers. index headset not enough of a upgrade over the vive to spend money on index headset but controllers compatible with vive so it a considerstion.
