Likely 1st party titles for 2020

Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Likely 1st party titles for 2020

Zelda BOTW 2 - Unlikely, I think this is coming 2021.

Metroid Prime 4 - Very Unlikely.

Bayonetta 3 - Possibly, we still haven't seen anything but it's been silent for a long time and it may be a short window between it's reemergence and it's release.

TBH I have no idea about unannounced titles, I can say a few I want like Mario Strikers but it's not something I expect will actually happen.

Mario 3D World port or Mario 3D World sequel seems like a good shout though.

Predictions (Made July 2019)

LTD: PS4 - 130m, Switch - 110m, XBO - 52m       2019 : PS4 - 15m, Switch - 18.8m, XBO - 4.8m        2020: Switch - 22m (Peak Year)

Switch lite really screwed up my Switch prediction this year! Looks like it's going to be about 19.5m-20m for the Switch in 2019, 14.3m for PS4.

Around the Network

I don't know why people keep thinking BOTW 2 coming out holiday next year isn't going to happen. I mean, it may not, but there is a good chance of it happening.

Majora's Mask only took 2 years. By holiday next year BOTW will be 3.5 years old. That is plenty of time. It is very possible.

BotW 2 I can see as the big Holiday 2020 release. However, I'd rather see a Super Mario Odyssey 2. I do see a new Pokemon game as the franchise sees a new release almost every year. I am guessing either a remake of an older generation in the style of Sword / Shield or the double combo game of Sword / Shield. I'd also like to see a good Star Fox that takes what there was in the SNES / 64 games and adds more story, more levels, etc. No gimmick like there was in Star Fox Zero.

The fact that this long post doesn't mention Pikmin 4 despite of the game being one of the very few EPD titles confirmed to be in development, breaks my heart.

Pikmin 4 is not confirmed to be in development. You have to stop clinging to false hopes.

You wish. Hope never dies.

Here are some things we might see in 2020.

1) The usual suspects - games that regularly come out on handheld or home consoles.

Wario game (either platformer or smooth moves)
Mario RPG
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (or other Pokemon spinoff)
Proper 2D Mario game (non-port or non-Maker)
Proper Donkey Kong Country (non-port)
Bayonetta 3
Metroid Prime 4
Tomodachi
Nintendogs
2D Metroid
various Mario Sports titles

2) Revive old franchises

Advance Wars
Punch Out
F-Zero
Starfox
Excitetruck/bots
Wii Sports (or something like it)
Kid Icarus
Golden Sun
Star Fox

Lots of others.  Too many to count.

3) Ports & Remakes

There are still a few Wii U games left to port.  On top of that we got Link's Awakening this year and Xenoblade Chronicles is on the way.  Nintendo will likely have at least one other port in 2020 either from the Wii U or an older console.

4) 3rd Party games using Nintendo IP

The Switch already has Mario + Rabbids, Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, Starlink (w/ Starfox content), and Cadence of Hyrule.  They are showing that they are actively trying to get 3rd parties to make exclusives for Switch using Nintendo IP.  I doubt this is going to stop.

5) Sequels

Pokemon, Mario Party and Kirby sequels are definitely going to come eventually (though not necessarily in 2020), and we already know about BotW.  Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, and Splatoon are all games that may or may not get another game on the Switch.  Also, while technically a Square Enix game, I know the Octopath Traveler team is working on a sequel or some game like it.

6) New IP

So far we've gotten ARMS, Snipperclips, 1-2 Switch, LABO, and Ring Fit Adventure.  (I may have forgotten a game.)  Nintendo is putting out at least one new IP a year.  I would not be surprised to see this rate increase either considering how successful the Switch is.  Nintendo can afford to be more experimental at this point.

In short, Nintendo has a lot of games that they can still release including several heavy hitters.  They are in no shortage of potential content.  This is not even counting the release of 3rd party content, which has been accelerating each year.  And the Switch is successful enough that Nintendo can take some risks starting new IP or resurrecting old IP.  In fact, I think it is very likely we will see at least one game from each of the categories I listed.

Excellent list!

Wario ware- yes please! Tomodachi.- If done right and online multi- Yes please! Mario Sports- yes please! Wii sports (or similar)- Yes, pretty please!

Advance wars- yes please! Golden Sun- yes I would like to try a modern take on it out.  Excite truck- Yes please with bells on it!

Also, on your revived IP's list i'd like to add a brand new Startropics. That i'd love to see!

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

Around the Network

Animal Crossing, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl remakes, and BOTW 2 will be the major titles for Switch next year.

Of totally unannounced games, I'm somehow expecting some Chibi-Robo title (don't ask me why, don't know either). Also, finally a new F-Zero title. I'm also expecting either another Labo title or another use for the Ring from RFA, maybe as a Wii Sports successor.

On Remakes, NES Remix. Plus a successor, SNES Remix, being announced.

As for already announced games, maybe Bayonetta 3 could be released next year. Offtopic, but also SMT 5 finally!

BOTW2 and MP4 are still to early in development for a release next year, I expect BOTW2 in 2021 and MP4 in 2022.

I think the Wii U ports period is over now, the last port was way back in early 2019 (New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe).

Early next year will release Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Looks like it isn't over yet. Given, there is not much left. Although all the great HD remasters of past Zeldas might be a great porting opportunity. Also 3D World.

I didn't see Tokyo Mirage Sessions as a 1st Party Title (I don't know the game though).

And I don't think we will ever see a 3D World port.
