This holiday season and next year should see Switch start closing the gap.

Holiday 2013 was pretty weak for 3DS in Japan and 2014 saw sales drop by 35% YoY.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Was the 3DS as front-heavy in Japan as it was worldwide in terms of sales?

Alrighty, so while it may look like a curbstomp for 3DS at this stage, Switch has a shot at catching up in the long run.

So would PSP vs Switch in Japan be a chart worth doing? PSP sold only a few million less than 3DS lifetime there.

Eventually it might be a good comparison, not now though.

2 years, 8 months

NSW-10.25 million (Mar 17-Nov 19)

PSP-5.75 million (Dec 04-July 07)

Ah, fair enough, not exactly a close chart then. Was just trying to think of comparisons we hadn't done yet.

PSP

2004/2005-2.68 million (13 months)
2006-1.85 million
2007-3.07 million
2008-3.69 million
2009-2.25 million
2010-2.90 million
2011-2.08 million
2012-0.90 million
2013-0.44 million
2014-0.10 million

NSW
2017-3.31 million (10 months)
2018-3.53 million
2019-4.5+ million (estimate)

PSP had an unusual sales curve having a slight decline in year 2 then big growth in years 3 & 4, a big decline in year 5 then another rebound in year 6 before finally tapering off for good.

If Switch has a more traditional sales curve of steady growth for 3-4 years followed by a steady decline for 3-4 years than it's possible PSP can start to gain some ground on it later in its life but at that point it will be too little too late.

So now that we have the sales numbers for all of last month, will the November Gap Charts thread be starting soon? :)
