Forums - Sales Discussion - VGChartz Gap Charts October 2019 Discussion Thread

Nice, I really like this new feature on the forums, looking forward to seeing this month's round of comparison charts!

PlayStation 4 Monthly Sales: 855,422

Xbox One Monthly Sales: 222,466

Switch Monthly Sales: 1,322,878

So Switch > PS4 + Xbone by quite a bit.

Also, out of curiosity, do these numbers include the launch of Luigi's Mansion 3, or is that counetd for November since that week ended on the 2nd of this month?

This perspective is definitely more eye opening. The more recent gaps are much more obvious from a monthly point of view. Switch a little ahead of PS4, but both are miles ahead of XB1. I wonder how early the holidays will start for MS come 2020?

What's also illuminating about these numbers if how rapidly Switch is closing in on Xbox One; according these figures, in October alone the gap between them shrank by 1.1 million.

Switch vs Wii – VGChartz Gap Charts – October 2019

Switch Vs. Wii Global:

Gap change in latest month: 408,110 - NS

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,230,955 - Wii

Total Lead: 9,689,903 - Wii

Switch Total Sales: 40,736,064

Wii Total Sales: 50,425,967

I'm still of the opinion that Switch can (and will, unless Nintendo stupidly cut it short prematurely) catch up and outsell the Wii eventually.

Wii got 4 years of support, then was abandoned overnight. Unless the make the same mistake again, Switch can last longer and leg it to victory.

It's always interesting to see the DS vs Switch/PS4 comparisons, as both of the latter actually tracked ahead of it for quite some time, in spite of the former going on to pass 150 million lifetime.

Only at 26 months did DS break ahead of Switch; would that happen to coincide with the DS Lite by any chance?

DS Lite was more like ~18 months after launch (varies slightly by region) but yeah that was one of the key turning points for DS.

It was kind of a snowball effect though (using US dates, again varies by region)

Nintendogs-Aug 2005

Mario Kart DS-Nov 2005

Animal Crossing: Wild World-Dec 2005

Brain Age-April 2006

New Super Mario Bros-May 2006

Nintendo DS Lite-June 2006

That 10 month window saw a bunch of huge releases that helped expand the audience of DS.

Do we know anything about VR sales? We kinda just stopped getting news about anything VR related. I guess companes are waiting to the next gen to launch the next sets...?

We don't track any VR headset sales. Only information we would have are official releases from VR manufacturers. Only thing we know is PSVR sales are over 4 million. That was announced earlier this year.

I know, I meant that I haven't heard of the companies themselves say anything about their sales of VR or at least I haven't heard of them. They suddenly stopped talking about them. I knew that hardware would be niche at best, I didn't expect this much silence. Maybe they are gearing up for the next generation?

PS4 vs DS – VGChartz Gap Charts – October 2019

PlayStation 4 Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 205,908 – DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 6,589,514 – DS

Total Lead: 31,750,778 - DS

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 101,342,408

DS Total Sales: 133,093,186

The second highest selling system ever versus the soon-to-be-third. PS4 will probably land between 130 and 140 million at the end of the day I reckon.

Switch vs PS4 – VGChartz Gap Charts – October 2019

Switch Vs. PS4 Global:

Gap change in latest month: 330,761 – Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,794,077 – Switch

Total Lead: 641,721 – PS4

Switch Total Sales: 40,736,064

PS4 Total Sales: 41,377,785

The DNA strands converging once again, with the systems almost equal at 32 weeks and Switch set to take the lead with the approach of the holiday season. Interested to see how long this dance continues until one eventually breaks away.

Worth noting that as of these numbers PS4 had had 3 holiday seasons and Switch only 2.

These graphs are very interesting with each of the consoles passing each other as holiday seasons come for each of them. So far at the points where the comparison is the fairest (12 months and 24 months in) the Switch has been ahead and it should continue for 36 months as well.
