Well, I am a huge Rollercoaster Tycoon fan, so I knew that before I had even finished reading the sentence.

A fan of the first two games anyway. The third was okay, but we won't speak about the insult that is World. Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 is probably my most played game ever, if it would've kept time over the years (and across all my computers), I'm sure it would've been thousands, maybe even ten thousand hours by now.

I forgot about Final Fantasy X in the past lists, but as it's HD-rerelease got a Switch release I am now reminded how I invested many hours on the PS2 into this game.

This is one of the big JRPGs and I think it's the last mainline Final Fantasy game with turn-based combat (which I in most cases prefer over action based combat as it allows for more depth if used correctly).

The plot is that Blitzball-player Tidus awakes in Spira, after his hometown zanarkand is attacked by a mystic beast named Sin. He learns that Zanarkand was destroyed 1000 years ago, so seemingly Sin transported him through time. Tidus meets a few new people, including most importantly a summoner named Yuna, who sets out to defeat Sin.

Character development had an interesting twist in this game with the spherical grid on which you activated nodes to gain abilities. Choosing a path decided over the development of the character.

And Final Fantasy X had with Blitzball the probably best minigame ever in a RPG. I had a lot of fun just playing Blitzball. Once I learned how to be good at it.

Yeah the first two Rollercoaster Tycoon games are awesome.  I could have easily have put the 2nd game on my list instead of the first.  In my head I kind of lump them together.  I didn't really appreciate what I had until the later sequels came out.  Apparently, the programmer did things with the game that no one else could do because he wrote in in assembly language.  The game was really ahead of its time and possibly still is.  That's why it's the highest sim game on my list.

#30: In the early days of this franchise, it seemed like every game was some sort of a 'subgame' of the famous 'main game'. Every game is still a full blown game though, and mine in particular focussed on one single building.
#30 (Hint 2): A tall building to be exact, and on top, on the 100th floor, you'll finish it by building the great Cathedral as it's crown.

Hyper Light Drifter

The second game will also be the highest sim game on my list.

It is indeed timeless. I guess it's the, basically, perfect balance of freedom for the player and complexity/depth. Most other games fail at perfecting this balance. I have never tried Planet Coaster, the defacto RCT successor, though.

It's funny you mention Blitzball, because a lot of how I rank Final Fantasy games has to do with their option content like Mini-games and post game content.  I know at one point I went through FFX and played as much Blitzball as I possibly could.  I do remember that being one of the best parts of the game.

Also, I really love this game because of Auron.  He's one of my favorite FF characters.
