This is a great action-platformer that combines precision platforming and problem solving with short bursts of action. It's a challenging game, that you essentially have to speed run to be able to finish. There's a 60-minute time limit, that's explained in the game's story. The sultan's advisor has poisoned the princess to try to take over power. A poison that kills her in 60 minutes. One part in particular had stumped me for years. In one of the later levels, there's an unbreakable mirror in the way. I tried everything from trying to break it to climb over it to going around. There wasn't much of an internet yet to just look it up, and years passed. One faithful day though, I started playing through the game again, and accidentally long-jumped towards the mirror. To my shock, it appeared you just had to jump through.

Hint 1: This game has lots of different names. Last in the US, call in the UK, melody in Dutch.
Hint 2: The game is set in a small English village.

23: Professor Layton & De Melodie van het Spook

Correct, and bonus points for guessing it in the right language!

#19: In one of the game modes, you can freely drive around. If you reach the edge of the map, there's a tall cliff blocking you from going out of bounds. There's still a way to get up there though, and when you do, then it happens.

Well, it is also my language.

#23 Mortal Kombat (PS3)

Mortal Kombat, otherwise known as MK9 brought the series to an all time high. Deadly Alliance, and Deception were great games, but ditched the 2D of the series roots. The first thing MK9 did right was going back to 2D style fighting. Adding the meter system introduced in Super Street Fighter 2 was a great change for the series as well. Finally, the roster was almost entirely series veterans. Those lame characters introduced in Deception and Deadly Alliance didn't make it over to MK9. This was the last Mortal Kombat game that didn't heavily abuse gross cash-grab tactics. MKX took game-ready characters and threw them onto two $30 season passes. MK11 went even further by locking 20% of the roster behind DLC or pre-orders, and locking costumes behind insane grind, meant to sent you spending even more money on microtransactions. Mortal Kombat is a legendary fighting series and MK9 is hands down the best one.

#22 Super Mario World

I grew up with a Sega Genesis. My neighbors had a SNES though, so I knew that Super Mario World was bigger than all four Sonic games combined. Super Mario World is still impressive to look at to this day, thanks to beautiful pixel art, and several 2D effects that were new in 1990. What really sets this apart from SMB3 is that Yoshi is such a blast to use! Doing everything in this game will easily take 20 hours. That's pretty good for a 29 year old platformer!

#20 - Sure, the Space can be pretty scare. You explore stations, and even a church and a infant school.

Hint # 2: Originally appeared on Sega CD.

19 Lunar: The Silver Star?

Correct, although I played the game on PS1. Such great games. I still have the original boxes for both.

New hints.

24- This country was so strong you had to pick from 1 of 3 houses. Eventually "civil war" happens and you seize control like a certain famous general.

23- You have to run away from this gigantic fire giant, but eventually you will have to face him. Luckily you get enough time zapping people to get strong enough and then you have to make a choice in the end.

22- In this game even walking levels you up. Jumping too. You can choose from many weapons and magics to do whatever you want in this world.

Hype!

24- Rome Total War

When I first played this game, I thought it was so cool to watch your fellow romans take control of cities while you pursued your own. I often started with Brutii, and had the privilege of taking the rich greek cities as ordered by the SPQR. On normal mode it was easy enough to take each city within the time limit, eventually getting strong enough to expand in multiple directions. After beating each enemy, it later became apparent that after their defeat you could play as them. The eventual civil wars are when things go down, but sadly on normal mode they are not too strong. I would crank up the difficulty in order for them to carve out a decent chunk of land so that they can actually rival me. And for extra hard mode, I liked to choose the Greek cities and fight everybody around me. It became increasingly fun as all 5 of my starting cities are besieged and with the little preparation I had only a few hoplites per city and no ranged. Luckily "strategy" wins here by stacking all the hoplites at the gate and waiting for the enemy to slaughter themselves upon your spears. In almost all scenarios Egypt makes for a decent enemy at the end, because when auto battling them, they always seem to win. Shoutout to the most random speeches some of the generals give.

23- Infamous 2

Superpower game before they were cool. Lightning is a very fun skill to use in a city with lots of water. Some of the battles were just epic, and all the cool tricks you could try to do, with the enemy being more varied as well. Sometimes you really felt like an overpowered mutant freak when lobbing out lighting powers over and over and recharging from every electrical thing nearby. The new ice and fire bonuses were also quite nice additions. Aside from the gameplay, the plot is also quite great. While you may feel powerful, there is the beast which seems unstoppable. And certain plot points reveal everything. In the end you have to make a choice, and it is very important and impactful in the game. The OST on top of all of this is one of the best I have ever heard, and it is not really in the style that I usually like.

22- The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind

If you like fantasy worlds and RPG gameplay then this is the perfect game for you. This game is massive, and doing anything in the game is making you stronger. A truly open world game, where after the tutorial you are set free to do whatever you want. You can challenge stronger people right away and die, or you can find a way to beat them. You can go to the big city or the wilderness. You can try your hand at the main story, side quests, or houses. Combat involves a lot of swinging and missing at first, but it is to be expected of an amateur like yourself. Once you get stronger a lowly rat won't even scratch you. There is a lot of text in this game, over a million words in fact, reading through the lore is part of the fun. Skills and attributes are entirely up to you and your gameplay, if you jumped a lot like me, then your acrobatics skill was naturally stronger. If you always walked to your destination, then your athletics skill will be higher. If you fought things a lot, then your weapon skills with that weapon will be higher. The magic of this game was lost with later entries due to streamlining the experience for the masses, but this will always be faithful representation of the fantasy RPG.

#20: Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins (Game Boy)
2D Platformer - Released in 1992
Down 8 spots from last year (was 12th)

Super Mario Land 2 is pure concentrated joy. I have no hesitation in saying that this is by far the best 2D Mario game - it feels at once fresh and familiar, and explores a variety of worlds that no other 2D Mario does. It's art style is timeless, and its music is fantastic. This is one of the five games I was lucky enough to get with my Game Boy back when I was little and I am very glad it was among them. A hugely underappreciated gem (particularly in the shadow of SMB3), the huge number of people who have never given it a go need to check it out, you won't be disappointed.
