Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo Tops 750 Million Hardware

Yep but what I find interesting is that it's only the best selling if all the different genres/series within it is combined. Pokémon is the biggest franchise if you only count it against the 2d or 3d platform games. Mario kart on its own is #4 I believe.

But that's only if you count all Pokemon games together, regardless of whether they're spinoffs or not. The core RPG series has sold 239.57 million units combined versus 2D Mario at 246.65 million. And even this is unfair, since we're combining all Pokemon RPGs regardless of whether they're remakes or revised versions, while we're splitting Mario platformers into 2D and 3D. Combined, Mario platformers are at 329.54 million.

If you want a breakdown: Flagship Pokemon RPGs have sold 136.60 million, upgraded releases have sold 52.78 million, and remakes have sold 50.19 million.

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to favour Pokémon, I just find it really interesting looking at the sales numbers for individual IP's. I even group them into my "own" judicial series :)

Pretty interesting about your pokemon numbers. That actually puts it below Mario kart as an IP.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

So a third of all Nintendo hardware ever sold, over 36 years, was sold during the 7th gen by the Wii/DS. Crazy when you think about it.

OP post:

"With their latest quarterly report Nintendo has crossed the three quarter of a billion mark.

DS - 154.02 million
Game Boy - 118.69 million
Wii - 101.63 million
GBA - 81.51 million
3DS - 75.45 million
NES - 61.91 million
SNES - 49.10 million
Switch - 41.67 million
N64 - 32.93 million
GameCube - 21.74 million
Wii U - 13.56 million

Total: 752.21 million

Nintendo is the best-selling video game hardware manufacturer of all time.

Here are some updated estimates on Nintendo's best-selling series.

Mario - 631.36 million
Pokemon - 290.00 million
Wii Sports - 116.31 million
The Legend of Zelda - 109.32 million
Donkey Kong - 66.55 million
Super Smash Bros. - 56.88 million
Wii Fit - 44.66 million
Kirby - 40.62 million
Animal Crossing - 35.55 million
Brain Age - 33.89 million

Nintendo's first party games have sold more than 1.5 billion copies."

Then ratolmc post:

"Impressive but I just cant help but compare Nintendo's numbers to the absolute monster numbers Sony's consoles have put up. (except vita lol)

PS2 about 155m
PS4 about 100m
PS1 about 100m
PS3 about 85m
PSP about 80m
PSV about 15m

That puts it at least 535 million units compared to 750 million Nintendo currently has.
What's also impressive is its only Sony's 6 consoles vs Nintendo's 11 as well as Nintendo having an 11 year head start in the gaming industry compared to Sony's playstation."

If OP showed both Nintendo hardware and software sales number here then why did ratolmc only show Sony hardware sales number? Want to compare, right? Then show both here, or he (and even you) can't do that? Again, are your reading ability and your brain are ok? Some Sony fans are more hurt by my own question it seems

That's because the OP titles is only mentioned "

Nintendo Tops 750 Million Hardware

So He only compare it using hardware. Which is why he is  very impressive with Nintendo "HARDWARE SALES "  .

After that you are offended by his post mentioned Sony even with 6 consoles generations also achieve a great feat , then you trying to downplay Sony using strawman argument by asking software sales, which is silly because OP are discussing hardware sales but putting soft sales just as bonus. Not a primary discussion.

If you want to be fair to counter his  argument just bring more hardware sales discussion without bringing software sales discussion.

He said: "Well obviously Sony's 1st party software sales pales in comparison to Nintendo so no need to add them genius. However I do want to add that Sony this generation with the playstation 4 have been reaching Nintendo's first party sales (or close to) with titles such as GoW, Spiderman, UC4, LoU, and Horizon. Obviously these IPs wont reach Mario and Pokemon sales status and may never will but guess what? They dont need to. Nintendo needs to live off their first party titles due to their lack of 3rd party titles while Sony has a strong mixture of BOTH 1st and 3rd party titles. You take away Nintendo's 1st party title, they'd be left with nothing! You take away Sony's 1st party titles, sony's console will still have Call of Duty, GTA, Elder Scrolls, Fifa, 2K, Fallout, etc. And these titles sells in the 20million+ which Nintendo misses out on which is why nintendo gamers are left with no choice but to purchase mario, zelda, pokemon etc. However I do understand the switch has been gaining 3rd party support recently though not at the level of Sony and Micro but that will definetely change as next gen arrives next year with Cyberpunk, GTA6, Elder Scrolls 6 releasing next gen. Im sure if we were to tally up overall software sales Sony would come out top. Its important to remember games like CoD, Fifa, 2k which releases every year about 20 million each and GTA V which has sold more than 100 million, Sony gets a piece of that money due to platform royalties. Nintendo will never get a piece of that money because they dont have Cod and GTA although they do have Fifa and 2k but they dont sell well on Nintendo platforms. So anyway my point is Nintendo's 1st party sells well because they typically have no competition with 3rd party because well theres barely any 3rd party titles on Nintendo consoles lol."
He clearly did read the op post and decided not to put Sony software number here since it would make Sony look very bad in comparison with Nintendo. He also didn't say that he replied back to just the thread title like you mentioned, then why did you try to stand up for him in the 1st place? Well, i think everyone here already knew the answer.

Why do you even engage a conversation with HoangNhatAnh?

Don't you see that's exactly what he wants? He breathes negativity.

If only some Sony fans didn't even come here just to play down Nintendo achievement, then i would't have to do it.
"He breathes negativity" Sure, only me did it in a thread about Nintendo hardware sales. You should tell that to Sony fans too

When do you think it will get it? End of December? February?

7.43 Million left, so...

With a good holiday boost, I can see it happening around February or earlier, yes. I don't think it will happen this year, though.

This could be very possibly happen before Christmas the way the sales are going right now.

Yeah, looks like I underestimated it.

Don't even have to wait that long; the "Switch is doomed once PS5 and Scarlett come out" narrative has been active for a while already, ever since it became clear the system wasn't going to burn out after a year or two and the wheels fell off the "it's just a short-lived novelty/fad" narrative.

I can see three successful consoles next generation with the PS5, Scarlett and Switch. Switch we know is a success and is tracking on pace with the PS4 and has a change to gain a huge lead this holiday. The three could sell more than the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 did.

It's possible, but it'd require a huge effort from MS to rehabilitate Xbox's image. At this point I think it's hard to say much about Scarlett when we know so little.

At any rate, by the time Switch is done, it should have brought Nintendo's hardware total comfortably over 800 million.

I will tell you one thing once you bring up Sony first party you already lost the debate.

First of Sony cannot compete with Nintendo first party because once a game stop selling well for Sony that will be the end of that game, it’s not something magical about they always want to make new IP, it just simply not selling well. Over Sony years there are many examples of games you can use for an example for current game we can use little big planet that came out for ps4 or which ever you like.

people may want to bring up 3rd party games as a saving grace but it makes your case worse because if all those 3rd party developers got together to make their own system or online streaming store it would be a wrap for Sony they do not have first party content to keep up with Nintendo and nowhere close to half the money to keep up with Microsoft.

NPD charts, Mediacreate charts, all charts basically show the majority of games people play on their Sony or Microsoft system is 3rd party games so no first party is not a big deal for majority of the customers it’s only for a small vocal online community the same online community that came after Pokémon and realize how small they are compared to the bigger fan base who do not see the huge problems they see

check the charts in a top 10 best seller for Sony systems or look at the last 12 months from NPD or go further back and you will see Sony only takes 1 or 2 spots in the top 10 best sellers for its system with everything else filled up with 3rd party

then you have word of mouth from Sony ceo a year or two back who says only 3 or 4 out of 10 Sony games make money but they still take chances on new games

numbers support Nintendo being okay in a future being on their own

and cut it out with saying Sony recent numbers show they keeping up with Nintendo look at horizon it drop price after 3 weeks from launch then Sony bundle it a lot to increase its sales which Sony do more bundles than Nintendo it help inflate the game sales

look at Spider-Man last year those sales inflate the number for Black Friday selling the game with the system which the system sold very well on Black Friday

how many bundles do you see Zelda or smash bros in? Look at last of us Sony best selling ps4 game it was basically given out for free Groupon at a time sold it for 5 to 10 dollars

and last part if Nintendo system sell well only people that can compete with it are 3rd party Mario kart Wii before it got bundle sold 30 million it took grand theft on two systems Xbox and Sony which both sold over 150 million together to sell 30 million on PS3 and Xbox 360

switch will reach 3 years old In March and it already have more 10 million sellers than Sony
