As the title says do you think Mario Kart 8 (Wii U + NS) has a chance of catching up and beating the sales of Mario Kart Wii to become the best-selling Mario Kart game of all time?

No

No

It already happened.

I genuinely can't believe it beat the Wii version. Not due to product quality, just given the Wii's success and it was a port.

Both versions of MK8 will outsell MKWii I think. No way MK8D gets there alone, but I do think it will go over 30 million. There won't be a MK9 until Switch 2, thats pretty obvious.

There was a way. Believe!

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

That's an unprecedented achievement from MK8DX. The new highest selling racing game.

As of today this is the longest we've ever gone without a new Mario Kart title.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to Today = 1651 days (April 28th 2017 to 4th November 2021)
Mario Kart 64 to Mario Kart Super Circuit = 1650 days (14th December 1996 to 21st June 2001)

If you don't class Deluxe as it's just an upgrade of 8 then well... Mario Kart 8 to Today = 2716 days (29th May 2014 to 4th November 2021)

Mario Kart 9 is well overdue.

Mario Kart 8 will keep selling until 9 comes out.

Wow, yeah thats a long time. But it never made any sense for MK9 to be on Switch once it became clear Switch owners accepted MK8D as THE mario kart for the Switch rather than just a port to hold people over. MK9 will be a launch title on Switch 2 in two and a half or three years.

haha there sure was!! Yeah back in 2019 before Switch sales went Super Saiyan I definitely didn't see Mario Kart selling 38 million. Now selling 50 million seems obvious. How things change!

The Switch Effect is crushing numerous series all time records. MK, Zelda, Smash, AC, 3D Mario, MP, probably Metroid soon, and so many others!

MK8D found itself in a perfect situation, it sold well on Wii U, but Wii U itself wasn't strong enough to cater for all the MK franchise fans, then NS arrived and took on board a game that not only just had satisfied a small part of its sales potential, but also fit perfectly both NS HW power and gamers wishes.

My first gut reaction was that this can't be true given that the switch isn't even 5 years yet. Then I realized that we don't have 2 hardware skews anymore and it suddenly made more sense.

Combined it looks like it will. Switch alone is possible as well, but that’s very far away. I think if will fall short, but that wouldn’t really be ‘failing’, MKWii’s legs were (are) insane.

Guess it wasn't that far after all.
