Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 is way past the time for another price cut

Tagged games:

At this point, I don't think they are going to cut the PS4 price until after the PS5 releases.  I mean, really, this would have been the year to cut the price.  The software lineup this year was pretty weak.  Sony didn't even go to E3 or have a significant replacement for an E3 presentation.  They basically phoned in the whole year.  Did they cut the price?  Nope.  PS4 is still $300.

Next year, the software lineup is already looking better.  If they didn't cut the price during a weak year, then I don't think they'll do it during a strong year.  After the PS5 releases, they'll probably give the PS4 one final cut, but I wouldn't hold your breath until then.

Given how well the ps4 is selling, I don't see the point in cutting the price.  Same is true with the Switch.  The Xbox is another story, they need a price cut.  I would buy an Xbox X for $300.

I bet we will see PS4 price cut to $ 249 but not much until 2021.

It was pretty easy to get the PS4 last year for sub $200 for Black Friday (hardest part was getting it in stock, but it was standard everyone that carried the PS4 had that price (it was a Sony price drop for the weekend), and wasn't easy, but not too difficult to find). It wouldn't surprise me if they made it a standard price all holiday season like xbox had their price low all season last year.

With Sony's second downward revision of PS4 shipments for the current fiscal year, it's safe to say that the original forecast factored in a permanent price cut that ended up not happening.

I'd say that's because of an external factor that Sony didn't see coming, because a reduction of 2.5m units through two quarters this late in the lifecycle is unlikely due to things that are under Sony's control. What happened is that Nintendo didn't cut the price of Switch, and Sony likely wants to be perceived as the premium brand in console gaming, so they can't cut the PS4's price with that long term goal in mind, neither of the base model nor the Pro SKU. So Sony takes a hit in unit sales for the sake of that image, because said image is deemed more valuable in the long term than the unit sales in the short term.

This is a good point.  PS4 is technically last gen, but they don't want people to see it as last gen.

Not to derail this, but Nintendo has had a habit to keeping their hardware and software at a premium because they can do it, and the fan just keep coming back. I hope Sony doesn't take this route for obvious consumer reasons. Nintendo has that kind of clout. I don't think Sony with PlayStation is up there, yet, and I do not think they will be as long as Nintendo stays true to themselves and their fans with who they are and what they have to offer.

I agree that traditionally by this point Consoles of that age should be selling for a bit cheaper. Sony however steadily keeps selling over 200k units weekly with competitor Xbox One struggling to meet 50k units, Sony is making money on the hardware now and unless sales considerably drop I can't really see a price point change until the PS5 rolls around.

That's what I think.

Its selling 200k units weekly on its 6th year in the market. Its insane. It absolutely has no need of a price cut. Every analysis you want to make of current/outside circumstances is secondary to that.

The Pro should at least be $350. IMO they should stop selling the base model and just sell the Pro at $350 from here on out. That way they keep their premium image, and offer an actual deal to consumers.

Until theres something better on the market in terms of hardware.... its current gen.
Switch is older tech & weaker than the PS4.

So until PS5 or XB2, its current gen.
