It is a multi-billion dollar investment on the couse of 10 years. Also most of the stuff in killed of google were not actually killed, just turned/merged into other services. Google Glass is a big example, it became an enterprise-level product, which fits better instead of a general public product. Similar to the 3D printer boom/bust. 3D printers didn't die, just became enterprise-level products used by the industry.
