Well I could technically chose not to expect a title screen for the next Resident Evil game, but since in this instance it would be irrational and illogical, in practice I would be unable to do so.

This seems to be semantics, because that's what molds our expectations as well of how mainline FF games will look. Because of how things have been before, and very consistently, we expect the trend to continue, and not all of a sudden break from tradition.

Of course. The games I recognize as primarily 'bad games' but I still enjoyed and appreciated are in the vast minority.
Galerian's Ash for example, which is an obscure game I don't think many have played. And for good reason.

It's still your choice even if you'd never make the opposite choice so you are in control here. You're choosing to decide your expectation based on common sense and evidence, which is good!

I realize standard and expectation sound similar but they are not the same even if I fail at properly articulating why. Expectations are simply what you believe the game will be, standards are based on what the game actually is. Expectations can be influenced by standards, such as how high above them you hope the game is, but not the other way around. What you expected doesn't change the fact that the game is what it is. That's why you can still be disappointed even if your expectations are correct. If this weren't true, if expectations actually did have an effect on the final product, then we could always expect the absolute best and never be disappointed, and that's definitely not the case.

Expectations affect pretty much everything to some degree. When something doesn't meet expectations it is immediately obvious and causes a reaction, its then up to the person to realise whether their reaction was appropriate or if they were thrown off by expectations. Expectations don't change the actual quality of a game, but they can affect the way people judge the quality of a game. How much you enjoy a game is all down to your subjective preferences, it's why your opinion on a game can shift, the game didn't change, but what you enjoyed about it did. Expectations can play a part in that and some people can look past them and others can't.

One non-gaming related example happened to me recently. I bought a drink, it was flavoured water and I had a pretty good expectation of what it was going to be, but when I tried it, it was revolting. I put it down in disbelief at what I just tasted. But then I looked at the label and description in detail and realised that it just wasn't what I was expecting and after trying it again, I could see that my initial strong disgust was out of line, I still didn't really like it, but I'd been so thrown off by expecting something else.
