Either Metal Gear Solid 4 or Gears of War 2.

People saying Super Mario Galaxy are bonkers. Not even upscaled to 1080p and antialiased to hell and back in an emulator it comes close to compare to something like, say, Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction on the PS3.

Cue the N64 background ruining the image even next to its most impressive feature, the Sunshine-like water shaders with pre-baked reflections.

Mario Galaxy is amazing game. I love that one.

Why of course, Ratchet & Clank.

A lot of my games have been named but nobody (first 25 comments, at least) has mentioned Prince of Persia. I thought it was really pretty to look at. I still do.

Gears of War 2 wins for me. It took the already stunning gritty shaders and textures of the first game, and took things to the next level with bigger and more detailed environments, and nifty new effects like fluid simulation and ambient occlusion. Still looks good today in my opinion, despite being 11 years old.

Honourable mentions from me go to Dead Space, COD4, Bioshock, Uncharted 1, Mirror's Edge, and Gears 1.

Gears of War 2, some have said uncharted but the first installment wasn't that great. Uncharted 2 however sort of showcased what could be done on PS3 with the right team and tools.

Heavenly Sword! Looking out into the distance and the waterfall at the start of the game looked amazing at the time!

Good lord, man.  I think the original Gameboy had a larger color pallet than that.   Joking aside, it does belong on the list anyway.

Resistance 2 and MGS IV are solid choices too.

Killzone 2 misses this list by less than 2 months.

Fuck, I hate it when VGC does this stupid shit where an image looks fine to me but is borked for everyone else.

Realism is dull to me overall so I look more at a style perspective. Some of the best looking games that had a realistic look to me aged as well as milk left out on a hot summer day. So they impressed me with their style and still hold up today. Realism to me is about the most overused and dull aesthetic in gaming. So I mainly listed games I thought had a lot of style.

You take a look at the graphics pipeline and the effects in play... Those are "Graphics" and can't be misconstrued thanks to subjectivity. - What you propose is taking a subjective approach based on art, which comes down entirely to personal opinion.

On a technical level... Crysis wins 2007 and Crysis: Warhead wins 2008 on PC. - And despite their "Realistic" approach, they still hold up visually even today.

Also, I did not list a single Gamecube game.

My mistake, I didn't exactly feel inclined to check the release platform of each game, especially as the Wii isn't a generational leap ahead of the Gamecube on a technical level anyway.

You tout objectivity but saying "best graphics" is defined by technical effects only is drenched in subjectivity. Where did you get this definition from? The term "graphics" merely refers to the images on the screen. That includes the technical effects, but obviously the art direction, use of colors, framerate, image quality, creativity, etc. as well. Prefering the graphics of, say, Muramasa or Klonoa over Gears of War is perfectly fine. There is no such thing as "objectively better graphics." Otherwise this thread would serve no purpose. Make your own thread discussing games utilizing most FLOPS or something instead.

OT: my favorite visuals of early last gen are probably Bioshock, Halo 3, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy and Geometry Wars.
