A bit underwhelming but still a good review score.

The most outlandish of art seems to be the most divisive, and this is no exception. I think this is less about it being 'underwhelming' and more like 'challenging'. The good reviews are pretty great, and the poor reviews are pretty scathing with little in the middle; I see this as an absolute win!

Just gonna copy/paste the to comment from the Destructoid Review...

"Reviews are strong it seems, i can still see the playerbase split in those what think its the best thing ever and those what think its the worst game ever. This is sure going to be a diverse game.

You know what though in these days of "AAA" "products" and "live services" its just nice to see a big budget game made by someone and his team with real passion who wants to share that with everyone else, this game has a voice and vision and is return to when gaming was more then just "live service" and endless DLC. Say what you will about Sony but i'm happy they are allowing and supporting games like this still. Kojima isn't for everyone i agree but gaming would be lesser without him."

I just can't read 'live services' without doing so in a sneering, Jim Sterling voice...thanks a lot!

As for this game, I agree. I absolutely love that it's a game with a AAA budget and an auteur at the helm, giving us something wholly unique and original. I don't think I'll enjoy this game at all, but the fact that it exists makes me feel all warm inside knowing that the medium can still be art. (Of course, I play a lot of indies, so I never lost sight of that even in the wake of modern cAAApitalism)

Honestly, there are a lot of games out there that I think are way more fun, just because they have parts that other people hate. Like Sekiro's extreme difficulty. Or all the self-aware weeb jokes in Xenoblade 2. A lot of times you can either make a game that is loved by many, or a game that is merely liked by all. I'd rather the vision of a game remain intact, than have a giant company cut parts out in order to appeal to more people.

I feel underwhelming is the right term when you consider critical expectations for Kojima.

God of War 8/10
Bloodborne 7.5/10
Horizon Zero Dawn 7/10

All of those are pretty respectable scores and within the normal range that can be found on the Opencritic pages for those games. But Death Stranding at 3.5 is not in the normal range. The 2nd worst review on Opencritic was still a 6/10.

Anyway Stevivor is normally a good review site. This is just their Jim Sterling BotW moment.

84 is a solid score. Lower tha expected but still good.

what? Schindler's List is not a 'fun' movie but it's still hailed as a masterpiece. Fun isn't the only feeling art can invoke.

Right, because when you want to sell gaming as a hobby to people, a common example used is, "it can feel like Schindler's List at times".

Shadow of the Colossus and Breath of the Wild could each be considered 'artistic' in their own right. I never had to feel bored playing either of them.
We are still talking about video games right?
