Nobody disagrees with that strict definition of sustainability. Nevertheless, I don't want video games to contain messages other than ones that add to their entertainment value.

Did you like Final Fantasy VII?

I don't really play JRPGs.  So, no.

How is that relevant?

Imagine a world where what prompts some individuals to rant online is the fact that companies are trying to consume less power for environmental reasons and censoring borderline child pornography in games.

Everything else companies do? Meh. Now, that's just way too much!

Final Fantasy VII has a very pro-environmentalist/anti-military/anti-corporate story and is one of the most beloved Sony titles (Squaresoft, but definitely a Sony game) in the history of the system.  Developers and writers caring about the environment is nothing new.  Sadly, much of their words have gone on deaf ears, or deaf wallets to be more precise.

I really hope TLoU 2 has a message about saving the planet and sustainability. The reactions would be golden.

It's time to boycot Civilization. Evil preachy game, flooding coastal areas and turning fertile land into desert if you leave polution around for too long. How did that every fly in the 90's. Nuking cities was fine though, as long as you cleaned up the mess afterwards!

Fantastic! That's great for you!

The technology it employs certainly helps though.

I.E. PC CPU's and GPU's don't run at their highest clocks and voltages 24/7, sometimes not even while gaming.

A mechanical-disc-less future? Either way I will probably buy a few external drives for next-gen as no way is any chunk of consumer grade NAND going to be sufficient for the long term.

I live in the southeast U.S., which is conservative central. I know people who are devout listeners of Fox News and right-wing talk radio. They are true believers. "Dittoheads" as they are sometimes called (a term that originated from Rush Limbaugh's radio program). They have been made fearful of most forms of government intervention in the economy and are absolutely 100% convinced that global warming is a literal hoax perpetrated by some grand left-wing conspiracy to do all sorts of nefarious things (claims range from "it's a global wealth redistribution scheme" to "it's a plot to take away our freedom and control people" to Trump's claim that "it's a plot by the Chinese to make the U.S. less competitive and harm our economy," among other outlandish claims). It's not about "making the world healthier for future generations." They think the world is just fine and will continue to be fine no matter what we do to it. They have been convinced by conservative opinion leaders that even the idea that humans could harm the environment is sheer hubris, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

No helping those people. Just laugh at them and walk away.

If it's in a more public area, I will debate them of course (Like on a forum), not to change their mind... But for others who are sitting on the fence and can see the debate unfold.

What they hear when someone says "maybe we ought to protect the environment" is literal communists plotting the destruction of America and the eradication of our freedoms. They've descended into conspiracy nuttery a long time ago on this issue, and in my experience once someone has drunk from the conspiracist Kool-Aid, there's no amount of evidence that will convince them that their beliefs are false.

There are few like that on even this forum...

They would rather believe their conspiracy theories/opinions rather than the empirical evidence that gets presented (In-fact was having a debate like this just over the last few days with a user in a PC thread), it's no different to those who believe the Earth is flat, we have all the evidence from all around the world and they still chose to ignore it and base their belief around a Facebook meme.

Best thing we can do is ridicule and point holes in their thought processes and walk away.

The only thing that would convince them that the scientists aren't lying to them is if we had a 3-meter rise in sea levels, they never saw snow again in any place south of the Yukon (because any amount of snow, even in the Wyoming mountains in the dead of winter, is evidence that AGW is a hoax to them), and if the high temps in Atlanta stayed above 110°F from March to November. Essentially, the worst-case scenario would actually have to come to pass for them to believe it. Even then, it wouldn't surprise me if they might try to find a way to blame "those damn commies."

Ocean levels are rising, about 3mm a year if I recall correctly, which is largely driven by thermal expansion (Basic thermodynamics/physics.) and melting ice.
Climate change doesn't state you can't have snow or rain or cold weather events... Because climate isn't the weather.

Climate describes the weather patterns over long time scales, whilst weather is the immediate/short time scale event... I feel many anti-climate change proponents tend to ignore that fact by making assertions that "because we have snow, Climate change is a hoax". - When that is far from the truth.

And as a firefighter, I have the data on my region in regards to fuel loads, precipitation data, fire danger indexes and more from over the past century and there is a clear trend towards higher average temperatures and less rain... Not to mention more fire "events".

As a Marine Rescuer, I have the data for the oceanic side of the equation as well as I work with various marine/ocean organizations and businesses for various reasons.

I just can't get my head around why anyone would deny any of it.

I think you misunderstand my position.  I'm fine with any content in games.  My only concern is that it is in the game for entertainment value only.  I don't want stuff shoehorned in for any reason.  Games are for entertainment, and that's it.

I've never understood why something as fundamental as "we should leave a healthy world for future generations" is considered political now. Surely that's something almost everyone should agree on, that its in our interest to provide the best for our children, grandchildren, etc.

Yeah sadly some folks have been brainwashed beyond the point of no return.

As I say, it boggles the mind frankly, that the simple notion of "hey, let's not completely fuck up the world for our kids and grandkids" has become a controversial issue. Still, I try to be optimistic, and it's good to see companies showing some leadership on the issue.
