Very rarely will a game get me right in the feels like Gears 2 did... Dom's wife man.... every single time just how much of a record scratch halt it is when you see that she doesn't look like the wife he was out searching for ... but just an empty husk, defiled to the point of losing her humanity. It's just heartbreaking to see.

Damn straight. In a series that mostly thrives on brash machismo, raw and poignant moments like this hit like a lighting bolt from a calm sky.

For me that's always been a strength of the series, that while its easy to write it off as the ultimate dudebro game on the surface, there's genuine heart beneath that crass exterior. (At least in the 360 games, can't speak for the more recent ones)

Exactly, I think if anything the fact that the game deals with every issue up to this point by ducking into cover and trying to get close enough to bury a chainsaw inside in the problem then the absolutely record scratch stop to this scene made it a million times more jarring to the player. Especially that reveal from what Dom is hoping to see... to what actually stumbles out and falls into his arms, the music choice as well, such long slow notes to let it sink in really slowly that she is completely gone and Dom has basically failed his mission in what he wanted to do, going from having his heart telling him to go rescue his Wife... to just pure rage of "I want to kill them all" His lines as well... "what did they do to you?" followed by his pained grunt, like... he knows exactly what they did to her, he has seen it happen thousands of times, he fucking knows exactly what they did to her.

It's fantastic, nothing close to that level of emotion in 99% of other games imo, his own sacrifice in the 3rd game was a bit of a shock but really... after this scene in 2 you know he just kinda wanted to get back to her in any way he could, his death if anything was a happy moment in a way.

Probably Gears 2 even though Gears 1 and 3 are equally awesome. I'm about halfway through Gears 5 and it's just as excellent. They're all in the 9/10 or higher range.
Only Gears 4 and especially Judgment are definitely worse.

But as someone else said, it depends on what you're looking for. I'm almost exclusively looking at SP here, but there are some MP modes that are better in Gears 4 or Judgment.

I voted for Gears 2. Gears 1 was a great game, but 2 just polished everything up to make an even better campaign. On top of that it added Horde mode, which was a ton of fun, and much better than the standard multiplayer.

I think I only played a little bit of 3, or was it 4? I am not really sure anymore. I've stopped playing the series. Once I was out of college, I didn't really have anyone to do the split screen campaign co-op that was so much fun.

Yeah I think that aspect would impact this a lot, for me 2 was the very peak of things because they had got the gameplay down in the first game and number 2 was all about expanding that universe and showing us more a reason to care about what was going on, kinda the same as how Halo one is more gameplay focused and Halo2 breaks out the big epic story stuff.

Online and competitive multiplayers are something that is probably getting better as the games move up the numbers just because online matchmaking and the types are going to be getting better and more refined as that genre kinda evolves on other titles as well as gears, but then I have never played gears online other than to play it 2 player co-op I mean, I never attacked anyone online that wasn't a pve enemy so for me that aspect of the game means nothing.

Yeah definitely one of the more powerful gaming moments of that generation for me. There's very little to I can find fault with in Gears 2 in general to be honest. It's probably my GOTY for 2008, though Dead Space and World at War are close too.

For the campaign, I think my favorite is actually Gears 1 because the core gameplay is simple and fun. It feels like a video game, not as story driven. That's why I am also a fan of Judgement.

For MP, I enjoyed Gears 4 because it was a just a more polished version of other games.

I haven't spent much time with Gears 5 yet, so I don't have much to say about it.

The only thing this poll tells me is that Gears games are quality games outside of 4 and judgement...and that does not mean they are bad so much as not on par with the rest. Between 1,2, 3, and 5 the fan base seems pretty divided, which is good as far as a long running franchise goes.

I'd say Judgement is definitely a "quality game". It may lack the huge setpieces of 1-3 but it still has the same awesome combat and I for one really liked the arcadey star rating system that encouraged skillful play and broke the game up into bite-sized "just one more" chunks that helped keep the pace quick and addictive.
