Forums - Gaming Discussion - Games you have a love-hate relationship with

What games have you enjoying them immensely one minute and pulling your hair out in frustration the next, or absolutely adoring some aspects of them while utterly despising others?

And what is it about them that you love and hate?

Bravely Default.

I love the gameplay, one of the best turned based battle systems I have played in a long time, the world I travel in, and the party members: Tiz, Agnes, Edea, and my boy, Ringabel, all are likeable and fun to play as in their own unique and interesting ways. I also love the first half of the story. I repeat, the first half.

I hate, and I mean, HATE, the second half. The second half is just padding; Pure padding. I can't remember how many times I had to travel to the same locations, fight the same bosses, and reawaken the same crystals, over and over and over and over again. And it becomes painfully obvious that Airy is up to something, but everyone just seems to be complete idiots and not realize it and it pisses me off. It's bad enough that you're wasting my time doing all these things over again, now you're gonna insult my intelligence too? Now, I know there are two different ways to end the game, but the first one, which is much quicker, is very anticlimactic, and the second one takes way too damn long to reach.

I want to truly like Bravely Default, because at its core is a truly fantastic JRPG, but for every one thing I enjoy, there's something else that bothers me just as equally. And, it just took what could have been one of my favorite role playing games ever, and made it into a one-and-done for me.

For this, I am going to harken back to one of my childhood favorite games, Sonic the Hedgehog 3...

I loved everything about the game, but there was this one part that always brought the gameplay to a screeching halt. Iy was in the Carnival World during the second act. You will come across a dead end with a cylinder that you had to jump on to get it to move up and down. It is actually a mechanic that I have seen used in many games before. Anyway here you had to keep jumping with perfect timing until you could jump off under the platform you were stuck on. The problem is that the physics were so bloody awful that at first I found it damn near impossible to do, and later just found it an annoying diversion to slow my pace.

Throw in the fact that I always insisted on using Sonic AND Tails, and you have a recipe for a bad time as Tails would also jump with me, throwing off the already delicate timing.

League of Legends

Let's be clear, it's a bad game. But it has features that make it so damned compelling. Not fun, but compelling. I played it for 4 years in college, because it was the only game I had time for. 40 minutes of playtime a day usually isn't enough time to game, but with League that was enough for at least one match.

Winning isn't about how well you did, but about which player on which team throws the entire game. All it takes is one retarded teammate not grouping up for teamfights, or getting caught out of position and getting instantly shredded, making every teamfight a 4 v 5. Or somebody not knowing when to kill Baron. The snowbally nature of the game makes it so that once somebody has gone 3/0, in the first five to six minutes, they are pretty much an unstoppable force of nature that takes an entire team to takedown. So you can be doing great in your own lane, but along comes some scrub in bottom lane that feeds their ADC and now the game is thrown.

There are way too many champions for anybody to have a chance at learning them all, and how to counter or play against them. Even back in 2010 it took me ages to realize I had to poke Tryndamere and play safe or die once he used his ult to become unkillable for five seconds. A lot of champions you have to just pickup and play in order to understand how to play against them, but that entails waiting until they are on free rotation or buying them. There are a lot of pubstomp champions that aren't broken, but will completely wreck new players. You have to know that Yi's 2nd ability gives him 300 armor, and the the only way to kill him after that is to stun him out of it. You have to know that Tryndamere can become invincible for 5 seconds. You have to know that Nasus needs to be ganked by the jungler or harrassed hard so he can't power up his Q with minion kills all day. You have to know that Garen's insane healing can only be stopped by continually poking him long range. You have to know to buy an all seeing potion vs Eve, or else she is pretty much invisible the entire game. You have to know that Darius' ult deals true damage and refreshes, and his pull has range and a specific cooldown. I could go on. There's probably 20 pubstomp champs in league. Champs that wreck new players and can wreck entire teams if they happen to get a few early kills.

League is free, but that's a bad thing, because over the years I must have spent $300 on it. I played League for a week this past month trying to get back into it. Half my games were horrible and over before they started due to other players playing dumb. I tried all sorts of different builds only to realize that there are a select few items that are simply better than any other items on certain champs. Every ADC will use Bloodthirster, Berserker Greaves, Infinity Edge, and Phantom Dancer. Every tanky AD top should use Black Cleaver, Merc Treads, Warmog's, and Spirit Visage. most AP mids should get Sorc Boots, Hourglass, Spellbinder, and Deathcap.

Also the game only has a single map.

You were absolutely not the only one lol. I would always try to make sure I had the water shield at that point to try to hammer it down that bit harder... not knowing that the only thing which mattered was any time I was holding down on the pad while standing still on the thing, absolutely mindblowing that it got passed QA without a diagram being added to the wall or something earlier in the stage somehow getting the player to know what to do with it, there was so many times dying there with 9:59 on the clock because me and my brother just couldn't get our heads around it.

Mario Kart 8 DX. I hate the Blue Shell, I hate when the game spams red shells, I hate the lightning bolt and I hate the f****** ghost. But yet I cant put the game down.

Need a Mario Kart 8 DX.... no items, Fox only.... FINAL DESTINATION. version of MK8D.

Great game though, Go for that full Golden Mario/Kart/Glider it was very hard to get but very fulfilling to have it online in games.

Ninja Gaiden 1-3. My favorite series by far. There's nothing even remotely close to the fluidity. But there's also a cheapness to the gameplay that makes me lose it. Also, even though 3 wasn't a disappointment to me, I feel like they could have revamped the gameplay. I mean the blueprint is there. The engine is perfect for the gameplay. I'm really hoping 4 is a revolutionary title in the series. Team Ninja is by far thee most underrated or underappreciated I should say dev company out there. They're due for a masterpiece.

Insert Coin. Press START. You Died. Continue?

The witcher 3.
The good.
Because game is a master piece when it comes to sidequests, world building, atmosphere, characters and the combat is ok ( not darksouls level, but at least not shit like skyrim.)
Also... Gwent.

The bad...
I never played The Witcher 1 and 2, so i feel like i'm missing alot of the lore, truly a let down for me. The lore of this game is gigantic, not knowing details of and feeling lost is irritating.

I have been trying to speedrun Mirror's Edge, nuff said. I have only two chapters to go though.
