Forums - Sony Discussion - TLoU part 2 will not have multiplayer

I didn't even know it had multiplayer. Now I hear it was pretty good as well. Still can't imagine how it would work, hide and seek?

Anyway I'm glad they put all the resources from multiplayer into including a ps4 pro optimized PSVR version of the game, right? Come on Sony, your flagship title should sell VR headsets like candy. After RE7, Tlou gameplay is perfect for VR.

Meh, will wait for a good sale or buy used then. $60 is too much for a linear SP game I won’t play more than once. That’s like if Gears launched with no MP. Yuck.

No offense, but Gears is no The Last of Us.

Truer words have never been spoken.

You only played the MP of TLOU once aswell according to the leader boards, what's making the sequels MP so much more important to you this time around?

One can exist just on its MP, the other can exist just on its SP.

What you have said is like saying you won't buy GOW because it has no MP... then again, there must be a lot of people like you working at EA.

From these IGN articles, it seems ND has sacrificed multiplayer for a better single player experience:

"In an interview with USG, Naughty Dog lead game designer Emilia Schatz explained the decision to not include a multiplayer mode in the highly-anticipated The Last of Us sequel. 'We’re focusing on a single-player experience, so we’re just making a single-player game for this,' Schatz said."

It looks like Naughty Dog is evolving in how they make a linear game with open world sections similar to UC4:

"The developers are taking a similar approach the studio has in its most recent games like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, with a “wide linear” design to the world."

"The best example of this in my demo was a portion of the Suburbs, in which I could have simply run into one building, exited out the back door, and moved onto a new area. Instead, by exploring every structure, I not only found additional supplies but also a back alleyway with a small environmental puzzle, as well as a nest of runners to tackle."

TLOU2 will have a lot more potential with this format because of its incredibly fun scavenging and upgrade systems.

From the small gameplay snippets shown, TLOU2 is looking a lot more versatile, with its traversal, stealth, complex enemy AI, dogs, dodge button, jumping mechanics & new types of infected enhancing the core gameplay.

Uh I played a ton of LoU MP. What are these leaderboards you speak of?

I wouldn’t buy a Gears without MP. Or at best I’d wait for a good sale or buy used, like I’ll do with LoU2.

Of course it can exist just on its SP. But not for me. More power to anyone who feels differently. I hope the SP is amazing for them. I’ll experience it, just not at $60. Not worth it to me.

Called it.

"If the vice-president at Naughty Dog says that there's no multiplayer in The Last of Us - Part II, then there's no multiplayer. It's that simple. Why else risk a blowback? If the multiplayer component internally is planned to release at a later date, don't you think they would've come out and said that instead of upsetting their fanbase?

Personally I think the single player- and multiplayer components became equally ambitious and they had to scale back. Now that doesn't necessarily mean the multiplayer component got canceled - I mean it could, but I don't think so - what I choose to believe, is that Naughty Dog has decided to make it its own thing, 'a standalone multiplayer game set in the world of The Last of Us', which will release 1-1½ years after The Last of Us - Part II.

2013: The Last of Us
2014: The Last of Us: Left Behind (standalone DLC)

2016: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
2017: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (standalone DLC)

  • "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a new adventure in the series starring Chloe Frazer. The game will be offered as both a stand-alone title and as part of the Uncharted 4 season pass---though you only have until December 13th to purchase the season pass or the Digital Deluxe version of the game which comes with the season pass."
    - Forbes

2020: The Last of Us - Part II
2021: Untitled The Last of Us multiplayer game"

I'm disappointed. I liked multiplayer in TLOU very much. I'm less hyped now. 7 years after the first game and they can't include a multiplayer mode? Maybe the PS5 version will include one. :(
