Some Reviews

Eurogamer - Recommended

A suite of enhancements help bring the virtues of this staunchly traditional RPG into focus.

Hobby Consolas - 95

Even if it is mostly the same game we had on the PS4 and PC, it still shines and the abundant new content maintains its freshness. And even if its visuals do not reach what we saw on the other versions (which is logical), it gets close and it is an adaptation with great merit for the Switch.

Areajugones - 90

Square Enix has decided to make the definitive version of an immediate classic out of something that, at the outset, may have looked like a simple adapted portable option: in this case we will find tenths of hours of gameplay, a magnificent turn based battle system and a whole new way to play the game in the West: the 2D mode, which will make nostalgics fall in love once again.

TheSixthAxis - 80

Dragon Quest XI is already an incredible JRPG, but this massively updated Switch release makes it almost mandatory. With new outfits, new quests, an entirely new 2D mode and a huge range of quality of life improvements, it's easy to consider this the best version of the game to play. The only thing holding it back from earning that title are some unfortunate visual and performance issues. A handy patch can fix the latter, but really the only reason not to prefer this version is if pristine graphics are your highest priority.

Looks worse and performs worse, cannot take any of those reviews seriously.

It has more content and a way better soundtrack, I'll take that over pretty graphics any day.

That's a high metacriric score for a JRPG...I will have to buy.

How much more content though?

Because if it performs worse, and is a downgrade graphically, that would usually knock a review score down (IE. Days Gone & Crackdown 3).

Wow a game ported to a console with lower specs looks worse OMG What a shocker, never could have predicted that. It's as if the developers had to make concessions to get a ps4 designed game running on the switch. The question should be does the extra content make up for the drop in visuals and the critics seem to think so because it has a higher metacritic than the ps4 version which scored 88.

I'd be more bothered if it scored less than the other versions. I own the game on PC and I've play over 60 hours of it. Based on the Switch demo this is the better version to play. There's a lot of nice quality of life improvements; like party chat being available immediately by just turning around and talking to your party members, or the fun-sized forge being usable anywhere. You also get 2D mode for retro fans, and more difficulty settings in the form of "Super Shypox" and "Party Wiped Out if Protagonist Perishes" quest settings.

It has a lot more the game can be played in a classic 2D mode for a start essentially turning this into two versions out the box, all character have new back story archs added, VA's can be changed from English to Japanese (prior versions had no Japanese versions), QOL changes, gameplay has had numerous adjustments and fixes (see link)...
