Forums - Sales Discussion - Global Hardware 14 September 2019 (PS4 Tops 100M)

Another thought. Hopefully more constructive and productive, maybe.

If Switch sales are going to be combined, period, end of discussion, would it at least be possible to move Switch to the center of the front page hardware totals chart? That way it would be somewhat visible that consoles are on the left, handhelds are on the right, and Switch is in between, since it's being considered a hardware combo basically.

It's not gonna matter before long, so why bother? The Vita is dead and buried, the 3DS is on its deathbed. Soon, tracking for those two will be done entirely and we'll either have just three systems to track or the PS5 and Scarlett arrive, take their place, and we'll be back to tracking 5 systems again. And when that happens, it's essentally two PlayStations, two Xboxes, and one Nintendo. The Switch will just be the one Nintendo system moving forward, so it's not going to matter where you put it on the front page because it'll just be "that one Nintendo system."

The best course of action, in my view, when those two systems arrive would be to just have the front page show the PS5, Scarlett, and Switch under the "This Generation" tab or call it "Current Platforms". That way we will have just 3 bars, 3 colors, 3 systems, for the Big 3 companies; 1 red (NSW), 1 blue (PS5), and 1 green (XBS). Then move the PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, and Vita back to the "Last Generation" tab, maybe bring back the Wii U and put it under that tab or not. And have them replace the 7th gen systems entirely since VGC isn't tracking them anymore.

As long as XB or PS doesn't do something unforeseen, then sure that could work. Unless that unforeseen hardware is very different, yet plays the majority of games anyway, then it's not really much different than combining Switch's.

In a case where hardware stays the same as it is now, and no more form factor changes, I'd just have Switch on the right side of the chart. That way since it's hybrid and handheld, it will be closer to where it belongs based on the past charts.

Scarlett - PS5 - Switch

Also, what about tracking PSVR possibly?

This is interesting. Whenever sales are brought up to benchmark other industries, everything is counted on what is produced. Who is the biggest manufacturer of PCs in the world? Whatever the answer is everything they make (desktops, laptops, etc) are counted and compared. Who is the biggest automaker in the world? Whoever wins, EVERYTHING they produce from luxury cars to cheap cars are counted and compared to the total of everything the others make. And you know what, no one bats an eye whoever the winner is. Why are you trying to make gaming different from every other industry?

I am not trying to make "gaining different". That would be to suggest that I am suddenly doing something that's different from what has been done before with regards to gaming. The real difference here is that all of a sudden some Nintendo fans are moving the posts. Gaming had always been divided into three categories, and more recently 4 categories. PC gaming, Console gaming (aka home console gaming), Handheld gaming and most recently Mobile gaming. I don't know why that was the case...but that is what has always happened.

I didn't just make u all those categories, and if you insist that I did... then you are being disingenuous cause that would b a flat ut lie. You don't see us tracking PC/GPU sales here do you? Or smartphone sales... those platforms all play games to don't they? So if you really want to put actions to your words, you should be pushing for us to start racking all thoe kinda sales too. Instead of trying to dismiss everything I am saying instead.

Dude, you are as transparent as glass. It was Sony who STARTED the "PlayStation Family" of sales where they combined sales of all their hardware and only stopped when the Vita bombed. Again, WHY are you trying to make the gaming industry different when judging total sales? As I've said before, when the Switch outsells the PS4, goalposts will move so far that they will be light-years away. This thread is just the tip the of the iceberg. Just look at how long it is. There's a ton of salt building up due to the Lite selling well. Its kinda sad actually. Also notice how many say, "the Switch sales will fall off a cliff when the PS5 comes out". So suddenly the PS5 is a handheld? Or when the PS5 comes out the Switch morphs into a console again? You guys are pathetic. Meh.

And that is the issue, the Switch Lite IS a dedicated handheld system.

Switch Lite is a dedicated handheld revision of an existing system. It is not it's own independent system.

Why is this so hard for people to understand???? AGAIN dont get salty that the Swich is selling this much. ASK SONY TO MAKE A PS4 Portable. Problem solved.

The reason why its becoming archaic is because we are at a point where each of the console manufacturers only have one product line.

And if only direct competitors should be compared than your example of Wii vs PS3 vs 360 doesnt really work since Wii wasnt really in direct competition with the other two.

Well.. the Wii was a home console. And I believe it competed directly because it took away that casual crowd that typically flocked to PS consoles. I also believe that the 7th gen created (or emphasized) a clear distinction in gamers. I don't like using the phrase but let's call them hardcore and casuals (personally I would prefer traditional and non-traditional but don't want  be accused of making up any categories). One can argue that the same traditional gamer space is the exact same space the PS4/XB1 is still competing in today. Last gen that space accounted for about 160M in sales. So far this gen it's tracking for around 140M. Will probably closes this gen at around 160M/170M when its all said and done.

Or just get rid of handhelds on that chart. Vita has been discontinued for awhile now and 3DS is pretty much done selling at this point as well.

I concur... maybe this would just be better if we just changed it all to Nintendo vs Playstation v Xbox. And jus track total gaming devices sales from each platform for regardless of gen or form factor.

You do realize that Nintendo would win that, right?

I'm a bit salty there is no Switch Home. I was hoping the early rumors were true of a PS4 level home console, even if it was tied to another hybrid.

Nin, please make a Switch Home.

I have my Switch docked 100% of the time. To me, its a home console. That's why I bought the one with the gray Joycons, because it would look better in my home theater.

I'm glad it works for you, but the portability is meaningless to me and it's too costly based on the portability. I'd require the extra costs be put into performance while it sits under the TV to make it worth the purchase, or incredibly cheaper based on it's existing performance.

For me, it doesn't work, and yet Nin does nothing about it. Does Nin not care about gamers like me? At what cost does making money or winning matter?

Everyone has to choose their path though because no path leads everywhere.

I'm confused about the point your making in response to my comment?

Of course you're confused. Your posts are pretty much nonsense. Why would the Lite need unique content when its the Switch? Think before you post. Also the Switch Lite has Pokemon and its cheaper that the regular Switch (that also has Pokemon DUH!). That alone will make the Lite a massive seller/bigger than the regular version. Its C-H-E-A-P-E-R. Get it?

It's always nice to have a 3 line attack post about how someone posts nonsense.... which then contains 5 mistakes. Impressive in a way.

Regarding the "content" of your post though, you talk about the good points about the Switch Lite, that is to say it is cheaper than the regular Switch, however it is cheaper at a cost of fair number of features and components that the base model comes with, Smaller screen, No Docking, No native support for full sized USB devices, far smaller battery capacity, no stand for tabletop play / youtube viewing etc. The Lite is cheap... for a reason, that reason is the things it cannot do which the base unit can do.

Just think about a game like Smash Ultimate on the Switch Lite, sure... you get the game on a cheaper machine, but you've got an amazing 8 player local gaming experience on a system which is handheld only, also if you wanna connect GC controllers to the Switch Lite you're going to need to power one half of the GC controller adapter from a different USB device as the Switch even with a USB-C OTG adapter only has 1 USB-C connector, so you couldn't even use the GC pad while the system was charging after you bought a stand to hold it in place for tabletop play.

So aye, cheap, for a reason... actually for a whole lot of reasons.

Here's the thing, though.

Aside from the smaller battery capacity, (which really isn't that much smaller than the revised Switch model's capacity), kids (their parents) and dedicated handheld gamers, the two audiences that the Lite model was made to specifically cater towards and Nintendo's bread and butter, are not going to give two shits about any of those missing features.

There was no such thing as tabletop play before the Switch, so without it, it's just a matter of going back to what worked before; The screen is around the same length and width as the 3DS in its entirety; Smash 3DS players did just fine playing that version of the game in handheld only, they're going to be just fine playing on the Switch Lite, hardly any people will feel too bad that they can't play one game with one specific control scheme just because the system is unable to support it and the people who still play Smash Bros. with a GameCube controller are a very, VERY minor portion of the audience anyways; And who buys a Nintendo handheld to watch YouTube?

The Lite model is cheap for a lot of reasons, and for those two audiences, it's cheap for the right reasons.
