Star Fox fans are too picky...so far I've loved every Star Fox game except Command. No wonder Nintendo doesn't like to make Star Fox games, the fans only like SF64 style Arwing missions, and nothing else but that precise type of mission will do. There's no way to experiment with the franchise or try new things because the fans seem to just want an endless stream of Arwing missions that do the same thing the exact same way as Star Fox 64. You won't hear me defend their constantly retelling the same fucking story over and over again, but I don't really blame them either because the fans seem to only like Star Fox 64 so why would they want a new story either? I used to consider myself a big Star Fox fan but I'm just so alienated from the fan base at this point that I just accept their gatekeeping. You don't think I'm a real fan because I don't only like one game from the series? Fine. I'll just play the games I like and hope that you don't convince Nintendo to stop making them. Y'all are worse than the Sonic fanbase.

Actually, people just like good games. Star Fox 64 is the only good Star Fox game, so as a result it's the only one that people like. Star Fox Zero was extremely traditional, a retelling of the original story yet again, and kept it mostly at on-rails Arwing/Landmaster missions. No one disliked it because it wasn't like Star Fox 64, if anything, it being too like it was one of the reasons people didn't like it.

The reality is that these games have just sucked. Both the SNES Star Fox games are nearly unplayable nowadays because of their choppy framerate; Adventures was an uninspired Zelda knock-off with no real interesting gameplay and clearly not a Star Fox game at heart, on top of adding a lot of non-Star Fox content into the franchise; Assault was an interesting game with good ideas, but terribly executed with some awful controls and bad level design; Command was Command; Zero was a decent reboot of the series, with the best version of the original story so far and getting the character redesigns right, but ultimately failed big time at the same issue as Assault, that being the controls.

Now see I have to disagree about Zero. I had no trouble with the controls, but didn't like the redesigns or that version of the story. I much prefer 64, both in story and controls.

It's less that only Arwing missions are acceptable and more that every time the series does something other than that, it does it very badly, hence Arwing missions are preferable simply cos they're the type of gameplay the series almost always nails. I wouldn't at mind on-foot sections like Assault if the gameplay there was on par with Uncharted 2-4, for example.

You may call that being picky, I prefer to think of it as having no patience for substandard gameplay.

And I don't only like Starfox 64 either. The SNES original is the best in the series. Starfox 2 is good too.

I don't think any of us are saying we hated StarFox/StarFox 2/StarFox Zero... Just that StarFox 64 is our favorite entry in the franchise, StarFox 64 was a pretty damn good game whichever way you cut the cake and it's always difficult to beat games that are regarded highly...

I mean Super Metroid is regarded as the best in the franchise, that doesn't mean the Gamecube metroid games were terrible, they are amazing, just some people prefer Super Metroid.

StarFox Zero was actually fun, until it wasn't because of the control scheme, just needed Nintendo to throw a patch out that allowed us to turn it off, otherwise it had some great visuals (For a Wii U), set pieces and audio... For me personally, I couldn't play the game past the second stage because of the motion controls...

Then again, I dislike  motion controls in any game, even Breath of the Wild which thankfully you can turn off... And the Puzzles that required their use were few and far between.

Anyone know the game Freelancer? I could imagine a Star Fox inspired by that game.

Oh my God! A game like this does exist! This is exactly the kind of Star Fox game I've been wanting and imagining! Nintendo, please!

The SNES.

Best console of all time, not just the best Nintendo console.

I LOVE ICELAND!

The one made by Digital Anvil and was developed by Chris Roberts who is making StarCitizen? And that Microsoft shut down it's servers and mods like Discovery Freelancer came about?

Nope. Don't know a thing. Haha
Absolutely love that game, spent probably a few hundred hours playing it online back in the day.

Freelancer was inspired by Starlancer and Wing Commander though, Wing Commander probably did help inspire StarFox to a degree, it was one of the big "space sims" back in the day.

Yes probably that one, you seem to know a lot more about it than me.

I think it’s a bit obscure now, but I played that game a bunch when it was new. I really liked the concept, and approaching planets was really exciting. I never got really good at it though so I stopped playing after some point when I was unable to finish a mission anymore.
