Forums - Gaming Discussion - Rockstar's output this generation has been atrocious.

It's a bit unfair. GTA Online is pretty much a different game altogether and GTA V is cross-gen as well. But yeah, they have fallen behind massively.

Yea it is full of a bunch of cheaters.  Sounds fun!

It's honestly really simple. GTA Online makes more money for them than pretty much all of those other games combined, so they don't really have the incentive to produce more games. It's sad and unfortunately another sign of the where the AAA video game industry is heading right now. It's all about these big live service/online games that they can monetize in perpetuity rather than actually developing new and interesting games.

This. GTAV was such a hit, that they are just resting on their laurels for the most part. GTAV online is the gift that keeps on making them buttloads of money with minimal investment. RDR2 was a massive undertaking and a well crafted game. Its online mode will keep Rockstar busy  until GTAVI. I fear their production of different and new IPs will forever be stunted by their new bussiness model.

That's the best case for quality>>>>quantity, it's like PlayStation first party's produce this gen when compared to the last that I saw discussed in another thread. It's a good sign, we don't need games like NBA2K which releases a "new" iteration every single year just to add more casino element.

Riding that nonstop gta v wave. Pretty lazy.

I don't care as long as they make kickass energy drinks.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

They could probably keep GTA Online going indefinitely as a platform, cease all other game development, and still make more money than they did in the days of Bully, GTA SA/4, The Warriors, and Red Dead Revolver. I remember that there were quite a few times in the late 2000s where they were bleeding money in between GTAs (probably making the next GTA) to the point where EA was eyeing them as a potential takeover target.

NBA 2K is their other big moneymakers. I looked it up and was surprised to find out there were years within this generation where NBA 2K sold more copies than Madden did.

Shut up and buy them GTA cards.

This.

I remember when Blizzard came out with WoW.  Before WoW, Blizzard used to make a lot of amazing games.  After WoW, the Blizzard pipeline slowed to a crawl.  I think the same thing has happened with Rockstar and GTA Online.

It takes a lot of time and work to pull a open world game today because every new iteraction of a rockstar open world game is bigger and has more features than the previous one. So GTA6 will probably take more time to make than GTA5, but will also be bigger and have more stuff to do.

Worst part is, RDR 2 isn't even a good game.
