Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Asphalt 9: Out Now on Switch (Splitscreen, online without a Switch online subscription, etc)

https://gonintendo.com/stories/344729-asphalt-9-legends-available-for-pre-purchase-on-switch

The game offers 4-player local splitscreen, a rare commodity these days, as well as 8-player online without the need for a Nintendo Switch Online account.

It is free-to-play and takes up 1.6GB in file size.

I wonder how they did it.

Circumvented Nintendo's online service? Not sure. There are a few third party games now that can be played online without a subscription, not really sure how that works to be honest.

Probably using some ancient technology where you can just access online services without having to go through a paywall. My ancestors told me something about that once. Maybe the technology isn't completely lost yet.

Shame its just on Switch, I'd like to play this on Xbox.

But if they could only pick a single console, Switch makes sense.

I too have heard tales of this mythical concept of gamers being allowed to play the games they've purchased online without being screwed over with an additional fee. What a strange notion, allowing a customer access to all modes of the product they bought. (Or in this case, downloaded)

A mobile only game, perfectly fitting for the switch.

Its in the Windows Store as well.

It's a F2P game. The subscription is not needed to play those online.

Gameloft have confirmed on Twitter the game will be 1080p docked, 720p portable, and 60fps.

A new trailer has also been released, which confirms splitscreen in portable mode.

Ah, so that's the distinction, thanks.
